At the end of Gotham’s Season 2, Rise of The Villains, Fish Mooney let out a triumphant “whoop” as she drove the resurrected inmates out of the custody of Dr. Strange. When the van unloaded, Penguin got the surprise of his life, seeing that his arch nemesis, whom he through had died by his hand, was still alive and full of wisecracks. The scene was set for even more mayhem and insanity for the start of Season 3 Gotham Mad City Heroes Rise.
Here are five of the most outrageous surprises so far in Season 3. Warning: Spoiler Alerts.
5. Penguin Got Elected Mayor
When Oswald Cobblepot launched his mayoral campaign in episode 3, few thought he could win. With Ed Nygma at his side; however, nothing was impossible. As our new American President was making his acceptance speech, the Penguin was winning over Gotham, beating his opponent in a landslide. What’s even more surprising is that he really enjoys the job and is hailed by his constituents as Gotham’s hero. Newly elected Mayor Cobblepot’s data shows that stocks are up and crime is down. It’s all well and good until he faces the harsh spotlight of a media investigation of his past. Do the folks of Gotham not remember that only a few seasons ago he was washing dishes for crime boss Fish Mooney? Do people mind that he and his right-hand man Ed are fresh out of Arkham? Doesn’t seem so, as he ran a heck of a successful campaign. In Gotham, apparently, any hardworking young man can achieve his dreams.
4. The Timer Went Off
In episode 10 when Ed had Tabitha and Butch prisoner, did anyone really think he would slice off her hand? The scene was a bit shocking for prime time; with the still twitching hand lying on the floor and Tabitha holding up a bloody stump before she passes out. Even Ed seemed surprised that the buzzer rang and the blade slammed down while he was talking. Shortly after, comic relief was provided by Barbara, who told Tabitha to stop complaining as she wheeled her into the Emergency Room. By episode 11, Barbara somehow talks Tabitha and Butch into saying “bygones” about the whole head shock and hand slice thing so they can all join forces with Ed to take down Oswald.
3. Mommy Dearest
Bruce practices his bat skills tightrope walking in order to use his key to the Court of Owl’s secret vault. Naturally, Selena did the walking instead. Things turn out a bit anticlimactic when what is inside appears to be an owl statue. There is little time to contemplate this as they are caught and Alfred has to once again instantly transform from caring father figure with all his “blah, blah be careful Bruce” to superhero to save them The surprise comes a few mere moments later when Selena’s mom shows up out of nowhere after 11 years. Soon mom is drilling her daughter on her status with billionaire boy Bruce Wayne while Selena is staring at her incredulous that she has the nerve to do the concerned mom routing after dumping her when she was five.
2. Olga Spills All
Who knew Penguins live in bodyguard/maid would talk for the price of a ring from Barbara. She sure has powers of persuasion on all fronts in the Gotham underworld. Olga sings like a bird for Barbara about her boss’ most intimate secret. Once she finds out that Oswald is crushing on Ed, Barbara sets a chain of events in motion that includes Ed’s abduction and a crisis call to Oswald to save him that turns out to be a setup.
1. Oh No, He Didn’t
The winter finale of Season 3 finds Ed and Oswald in a standoff. Cobblepot confesses that he did not know what love was really about but now he does. Because of the chemistry between the two characters, viewers think they might just have their first romantic kiss, as the energy is so charged. Instead, takes a page out of Gordon’s playbook but instead of pretending to shoot Oswald, he actually does it. The shock on Penguins face as he falls backward into the river (again) is priceless. But as the first spring episodes unfold, it’s clear that it’s not so easy to keep a good Penguin down, and Ed will have to deal with a very pissed off Oswald once he recovers.
Honorable Mention: Yes, Jerome is alive! He was one of the reanimated escapees in the Arkham van. Many fans had caught what they thought was a glimpse of his trademark red hair at the tail end of Season 2, so it really was not that surprising.
