The world was fascinated with the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard situation in May.

To recall, this whole thing started when Amber Heard accused Depp of being abusive throughout their marriage. For a while, it appeared that the public was on her side following the shocking judgment of the libel lawsuit in the United Kingdom against News Group Newspapers, which was the company publishing The Sun. The newspaper claimed that Depp was a “wife beater'” in an April 2018 article.  Depp’s career took a massive downturn following that disappointing loss, with the most notable being that he had to re-sign from the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Fast Foward to April 11th, and the world was glued to the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard case in Fairfax County, Virginia. The courtroom drama featured several shocking reveals, such as the fecal matter found on Johnny’s bed, the texts from Johnny Depp to a friend, and several audio records of the couple fighting. The veteran actor ultimately won the court case, but people who witnessed the battle between the former lovers still talk about the stunning testimony. Those statements involved big names such as Dakota Johnson, who briefly worked with Depp in the 2015 feature, Black Mass. There was a 2015 viral video clip of the actress looking concerned when Depp put his bandaged finger on the table beside her during a press conference promotion for the feature at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. During the Depp/Heard trial, the Black Mass star claimed that his ex-wife cut off the tip of his finger with a vodka bottle during an argument in 2015.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson talked about her surprising involvement with the defamation case and why she wasn’t thrilled that her name was dragged into the Johnny/Amber situation, “I was like, ‘For the love of God, why? Why am I involved in this? I don’t remember that at all, but please, take me out of this. Don’t let this go further.”

Luckily for Johnson, she was never called to testify during the trial, but the 50 Shades of Grey actress couldn’t imagine getting caught up in the trial over a moment she didn’t remember, “Can you imagine, oh, my God, if I was called to the witness stand? She continued, “I can’t believe that people are watching [the trial] like it’s a show. It’s like it’s a courtroom drama, and my heart breaks. It’s so, so, so crazy. Humans are so f**king weird. The internet is a wild, wild place.”

Despite wanting nothing to do with the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial, Johnson went on to praise working with the Oscar nominee, “I knew Johnny Depp from my childhood. He was friends with my dad,” Johnson revealed. “It was a real honor and treat to work alongside someone [Depp] who is … so gifted.”

“I knew Johnny Depp from my childhood. He was friends with my dad,” Johnson revealed. “It was a real honor and treat to work alongside someone [Depp] who is … so gifted.” Cancel culture had a huge part in Johnny Depp’s career. While their fans believed that the actor was innocent, acting gigs in Tinseltown dried up once the UK judge ruled in Amber Heard’s favor. Now, the tables have turned as Heard wasn’t painted in the best light throughout the trial. Johnson struggles to understand cancel culture, noting that everyone makes mistakes in their life,

“What I struggle with in terms of cancel culture is the term cancel culture – the whole concept behind canceling a human being, like they’re an appointment,” she said. “No person will not make mistakes in their life. The point of being is figuring it out. Hurting other people and harming other people is not okay. There are consequences for those actions. But the concept of the Twitterverse deciding if someone just all of a sudden doesn’t exist anymore is horrifying, heartbreaking, and wrong.”

Johnson has had a busy year. The actress starred in three films, 2022: Am I Ok?, Cha Cha Real Smooth, and Persuasion. However, Johnson still has a full plate on her schedule as she’ll star in the Spider-Man spinoff, Madame Web. The upcoming Spider-Man spinoff will hit theaters on July 7, 2023, with Johnson playing the title character. A report from Deadline hinted at the plot of the film, which is essentially an origin story following the clairvoyant character whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world. There’s no word on whether Spider-Man will actually pop up in the upcoming film.
