The Fallout TV series joins Amazon Prime Video’s lineup of new shows to premiere in 2024. So far, the 2020s have been an amazing decade for gamers, who have seen several top video games adapted into TV series. Notably, Paramount+’s Halo, HBO’s The Last of Us, and Peacock’s Twisted Metal have all been successful.
Available on all gaming platforms, Fallout is one of the most anticipated video game-adapted TV series. While unarguably based on the role-playing video game franchise, the TV series promises to stay true to its source materials. Here’s everything to know about the new Fallout TV series.
What The Fallout TV Series Will Be About
Staying true to its source material, the Fallout TV series is set in a fictionalized United States with an alternate history. Basically, it revolves around scenarios that diverge from reality after 1945, following World War II. The world as humans once knew it ceased to exist after a nuclear holocaust killed most of its population. However, several Vaults were constructed underground as a haven for survivors and humanity’s preservation. Offered at a price, not all humans could afford entrance into these Vaults.
The Fallout TV series begins 219 years after the nuclear war, with a focus on one of these underground Vaults, Vault 33. Having been born and living in Vault 33, Fallout’s primary protagonist, Lucy MacLean, ventures out of the safety of the Vault in search of her father, Hank MacLean, who’s also the Overseer of Vault 33. Outside the Vault, Lucy encounters a survivalist world filled with hostile, brutal, and dangerous people who now inhabit the Wasteland of a devastated Los Angeles.
Many humans who were unable to enter the Vault but survived the nuclear blasts were exposed to the radiation. These turned them into Ghouls, having either necrosis or extended lifespan, or both. As Lucy MacLean journeys through the Wastelands in search of her father, new characters (friends, enemies, and alliances) are introduced. One such character who becomes the series’ villain is the over 250-year-old The Ghoul, who has lived before, during, and after the nuclear wars.
Who Stars In The Fallout TV Series?
Although the Fallout TV series doesn’t pack a star-studded cast, it casts talented actors who help portray each character in a near-perfect semblance with its video game counterparts. Leading the cast is English actress Ella Purnell, who plays Lucy MacLean. Purnell is not a stranger to television and is known for playing Jackie Taylor in Yellowjackets (2021–2023) and voicing Jinx in Arcane (2021). She also played Teen Maleficent in Maleficent (2014) and Kate Ward in Army of the Dead (2021). American actor Walton Goggins plays the Fallout TV series villain, The Ghoul, and his flashback counterpart, Cooper Howard.
Like Purnell, Walton Goggins has also had a successful television career. TV audiences will know him from TV roles in The Shield (2002–2008), Justified (2010–2015), The Righteous Gemstones (2019–present), and The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey (2022). Actor Aaron Moten also joins the main cast as Maximus, a soldier in the Brotherhood of Steel. Veteran American actor Kyle MacLachlan also stars as Hank, the Overseer of Vault 33, and Lucy’s father, in the Fallout TV series. Other supporting and guest cast members include:
- Michael Emerson as Wilzig
- Matt Berry as Mr. Handy
- Moisés Arias as Norm MacLean
- Xelia Mendes-Jones as Dane
- Johnny Pemberton as Thaddeus
- Dale Dickey as Ma June
- Cherien Dabis as Birdie
