Over the years Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo have entertained many millions of people around the world by creating their own unique user experiences. However, when it comes to creating something unlike anything else on the market, none have come close to Nintendo. While Xbox and Playstation have released consoles and games which aver very much in the same ballpark, Nintendo has continued to create consoles which aren’t even playing the same metaphorical game.
The Wii was a great example of this. As Xbox and Playstation release the 360 and Playstation 3, which were mostly interchangeable in terms of games (except for some exclusives), the Wii offered something entirely different. Obviously, this was more of a risk, but one that paid off. According to 2016 statistics on Statista, the Wii sold over 101 million units, with the PS3 and Xbox 360 selling just over 86 and 85 million respectively.
Their latest console, the Switch, continues to tread a different path to other consoles on the market. It has the capability to play the traditional way through a television or as a portable device. Their differing approach and back catalogue of brilliant and exclusive games also makes old Nintendo consoles carry a certain nostalgia that others perhaps don’t.
This is captured perfectly in a new infographic from twizzle.co.uk. It’s called ‘The Evolution Of The Nintendo Games Console‘ and you can check it out below. It features every successful (and not so successful) Nintendo release running from the first in 1977 right up to the 2017 Switch.
