The mere fact that people are going nuts over Daniel Day-Lewis being spotted with a flip phone is just one more reason why people are considered to too much into the ‘now’ of Hollywood and the lives of its stars. It’s a known fact that Daniel has said that he’s retiring from acting and that’s all well and good. The guy has been a noted star for a while and it’s been hinted at that he might be getting ready to say goodbye. Phantom Thread was supposedly his last film and then he’ll be off to do whatever comes next. But people taking pictures of him and for some reason going out of their minds about the fact that he’s holding a flip phone is kind of silly.
First of all some people still do use flip phones. It’s either because they don’t want the added expense of a smartphone or they just don’t like the fact that you can be tracked using the phone. It’s a valid concern, especially if a person wants to go off the grid for a while and doesn’t want anyone knowing where they are. Some might call that suspicious, but some from earlier generations might state that this is instead going back to a time when we didn’t need to monitor where a person was at every moment. That being said he might just prefer a ‘dumb’ phone to a smart one, as some people have been known to say. After all, if anyone remembers, the idea of a phone was to call people, not play games all day or check up on whatever online news you might want to know about. That used to be the kind of thing you’d have to read a newspaper for, or watch the TV, or at the very least look for online when you got home at the end of the workday.
Second, why are people so invested in what celebrities do on their downtime? It’s great that fans love to see their favorite actors on TV and in the movies, but when they’re not onscreen or in a public gathering where they’re the star then it’s usually considered polite to give them some space and not film or take their picture without their consent. But people are people and therefore are going to do what they want, right? This woman that took the pictures is no doubt one of those that sees a movie star and is just google-eyed until the moment she can get on her phone and start tweeting to anyone who will listen that she just saw a celebrity. That’s all well and good for them but mentioning that the actor had a flip phone and seeming to be surprised about it was kind of, well, unnecessary.
Just because someone uses an outdated piece of tech people tend to stare and get a little kooky since to be honest the majority of people will almost always want the newest and biggest thing to come out on the market. Daniel doesn’t seem to share that sentiment.
