Drilling Down’s Matty Blake Talks about Curse of Oak Island Season 5

The Lagina brothers are at it again. Season 5 of The Curse of Oak Island has been officially announced. Viewers are tempted with the promise of an uncovered pirate’s chest and three keys for other chests. For those who’ve been watching the show since the beginning, there are two ways of looking at this latest news. Either believe it and expect it to be great. Or, believe that what looks like a pirate’s chest and three keys may turn out to be something else.

Matty Blake, host of the after-show Drilling Down, arrived at the island to film his show for Season 5. He posted on Instagram that after ten days of filming he knows just how much new is going to happen. He’s described the island as one of the most beautiful places on earth, and that this season’s island filming has been the most exciting ever. He’s been able to relay questions from fans to the Lagina brothers and the Oak Island team, and their answers will be revealed during Season 5.

Matty hosts a daily rock radio show on WAAF 107.3 in Boston, and started to host Drilling Down when it was a preview at the beginning of Season 3. Starting with Season 4, Drilling Down aired as an after-show, and Matty continued has host.

He’s excited about the upcoming show in new ways, because he’s personally seen the huge amounts of piping and equipment arriving on flatbeds traversing the causeway to the island. The massive cranes and extra piping are causing island watchers to speculate that the Laginas will be going deeper than ever this season.

The air date for the first episode of the new season is November 7, and Matty says his time on the island is the most eventful he’s experienced. He also says that fans are “going to love” how much is happening in Season 5.

It’s been a show filled with plenty of planning, plenty of speculating, plenty of activity. The problem is that for all the hard and extended effort, everything discovered is as open-ended as a broken circle. Plenty of viewers have stopped watching altogether, with the words, “When they actually find something, then I’ll tune in for the big reveal.” It’s been too frustrating for some to watch hours of possible discoveries with no results. Skeptics all.

On the other side of the camp, are viewers who have remained intrigued from the beginning. They’ve been watching every effort, squinting at every monitor, holding their breath with hopes of success. Treasure hunters all.

Will the lure of never-before-used technology be enough to capture the imaginations again? Will the promise of more unannounced artifacts being uncovered be enough to gather round the television once more? News is that more equipment than ever before has arrived at the island, including that flat-bed of trucks (described as an entire convoy) driven across the causeway to begin operations on the island.

Season 5 has received a huge bundle of $1.5 million in funding from the Nova Scotia Film and Television Production Incentive Fund. That’s more than a 50% increase than the show received for Season 4. Since Oak Island is located off the coast of Nova Scotia, money from the fund is available to pay for equipment and labor sourced from suppliers located within the province. If anything can be said about success, it is certainly true that Curse of Oak Island has brought work opportunities, new business, and tourism to the province in a huge way. The island dig this time is huge, too, and promises that the Laginas uncover huge finds to match are hard to ignore.

The Curse of Oak Island averaged 5.4 million viewers watching each episode in Season 4. It’s the History Channel’s most popular show. As fans are joking about how the Laginas will find more wood, the Laginas are in it to win. We’ll see.
