Doctor Strange Clip Explains the Lengths Marvel Went to Cast Benedict Cumberbatch

Any director in Hollywood would want Benedict Cumberbatch to be in their movie.  As it turns out it was no different for the staff around Marvel’s Doctor Strange.  In an exclusive clip just released by Collider, we learn that Marvel went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that Cumberbatch was their man.   He was their initial first choice but schedule conflicts forced the studios to look elsewhere.  But that’s not how it all went down:

Cumberbatch was the first actor Marvel and director Scott Derrickson wanted to play Doctor Strange, but his schedule was muddled by Sherlock and a stage run with Hamlet. So Marvel moved on to some of the names mentioned above, eventually deciding that it had to be Cumberbatch. At this point the studio made an unprecedented move–they pushed the filming schedule of Doctor Strange back to accommodate Cumberbatch’s schedule, meaning Derrickson and his team had an abbreviated post-production period to get the film ready in time for its November 2016 release. The squeeze was so tight that 36 hours after Cumberbatch wrapped up his last performance in Hamlet, he was in Nepal shooting Doctor Strange.

Do you think Marvel regrets this move?  Of course not.  While no sequel has been talked about yet, you can be sure that Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Strange multiple times..  He’s just too good an actor right now, not to mention one of the most versatile.  There’s zero typecast with this guy.  He can play anything.
