“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was the second most recent theatrical release from Marvel so far in 2022, after “Thor: Love and Thunder”, and with the heavy mixed magic and multiverse concepts that have long been alluded to from previous releases, between Disney+ and theatrical releases. With the heavy magic concepts that come with a Doctor Strange film Marvel created an augmented reality experience for fans of the films, and characters and concepts, in general, so that they can take them further and into their own hands with an AR experience. Below, we’ve gone into detail on the Doctor Strange Augmented Reality Experience from Marvel, as well as other details from Marvel’s part Augmented reality experiences.
Marvel’s Eternals AR Story Experience
First, we’ve gone over the most recent AR mobile experience from Marvel, before they enchanted users with a Doctor Strange AR experience. The Eternals AR experience, compared to the Doctor Strange AR experience, took less advantage of the possibilities of augmented reality, but still was an experience, to say the least. The Eternals AR experience was iOS exclusive, interestingly, and was more of a story experience over a behind-the-scenes look. Marvel released an app on iOS for the Eternals AR Story Experience that let players go deeper into the story of the film, as a prequel story, and explore additional elements. Marvels pulled users into the AR experience with a pleasing intro statement on their website, “Step inside the film with Sprite, an Eternal, as your guide. Go on an epic Augmented Reality adventure through time and space to discover the truth about humanity.” Marvel went on to discuss other enticing features as an intro to please users, before deciding to embark on the augmented reality experience, as well as stated officially it was a prequel, of sorts. The overall story allowed users to find out why Eternals have been on Earth for thousands of years, operating secretly, as well as engage with several characters from the film and witness their powers and abilities firsthand, as well as using augmented reality to create a unique experience in your own home. However, the major difference between the Eternals AR Story Experience versus the Doctor Strange Augmented Reality experience was the capabilities between the two, due to Eternals being a stronger iOS exclusive app instead of a page accessible with Safari.
Marvel Taking Advantage of the Multiverse with Doctor Strange AR
While an app has power on its own that can be scripted differently than a simple webpage, coming from the Eternals AR Story Experience as an iOS exclusive app, Safari was the easy choice to showcase with the Doctor Strange AR Experience. According to Marvel, “With the all-new Doctor Strange Augmented Reality Experience you don’t need training in the mystic arts to travel through a portal of your own and discover more about Marvel Studios ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.” The experience allowed users to unlock additional content related to the movie, as well as other content only available on the Blu-Ray and digital editions of the film. Although nothing specifically stated that the Doctor Strange AR Experience was a Safari exclusive, the images on Marvel’s site suggest so, and visiting the official website for the experience invited users to scan a QR code on their phones.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” Bonus Features
While each edition of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” has its own features, including the Doctor Strange AR Experience, below we’ve rounded up the features that could be found on the Blu-Ray option to own the film, post-theatrical release, between featurettes, bloopers, deleted scenes, and more. Featurettes included with the film include Method to the Madness, an inside look at the cast and crew that made the film possible, Introducing America Chavez, a deep dive into the hero first introduced alongside an alternate reality Doctor Strange, and Constructing the Multiverse. Constructing the Multiverse explored the heightened difficulty that came with creating a multiversal Marvel film. As with most films, a gag reel was recorded during the filming of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and showcased the fun that could be had on set with some of our favorite MCU actors. Three deleted scenes have also been made available to those that have acquired the Blu-Ray version of the film, A Great Team, Pizza Poppa, and It’s Not Permanent, with each one adding a slightly comedic look on top of the darkness throughout the film. Finally, the final feature to come with the Blu-Ray edition of the film was the audio commentary supplied by the director, writer, and producers of the film, which gave fans even more insight into the making of the film.
