While everyone who ever watched or had any kind of interested in Twin Peaks is extremely excited by the return after a 25 year absence, famed director of the series David Lynch still insists he’s done making feature films. I’ve been 11 years since Lynch directed a feature film. His last one being Inland Empire which was released in 2006. So what did he do in between 2006 and taking on the Twin Peaks job? Lots of stuff. Lynch painted, acted, composed music, directed some commercials, as well as touting transcendental medication in the late 2000s. Despite getting back into the director’s chair, Lynch insists it hasn’t inspired him to get back into film.
“Things changed a lot,” Lynch tells The Sydney Morning-Herald in an interview published earlier today. “So many films were not doing well at the box office even though they might have been great films and the things that were doing well at the box office weren’t the things that I would want to do.” Asked point-blank if Inland Empire would be his last film by an interviewer who doesn’t seem to think that Lynch’s 2014 Duran Duran concert documentary counts, Lynch says, “Yes it is.”
No matter what Lynch decides to do after the conclusion of one last Twin Peaks run, you can bet it’ll be on his own terms and it’ll be interesting.
