Daredevil has consistently delivered strong performances throughout its first three episodes, but I’ve been eagerly anticipating a more intense escalation. That moment finally arrives in “In the Blood,” an episode that propels the story into its next chapter. With the characters and their motives well-established, this hour of Daredevil introduces some intriguing new elements to the show.
Matt and Claire’s Evolving Relationship
The episode kicks off with Claire tending to Matt’s wounds once again, questioning his habit of showing up unannounced. To avoid any awkward encounters, Matt finally gets her number so he can check in before dropping by. Claire’s temporary relocation to her friend’s apartment proves to be a wise move, as the Russians learn her whereabouts from their hospitalized associate. Fortunately, she’s not there when they come looking for her.
However, Santiago, who lives downstairs, isn’t so lucky. The Russians threaten him and his mother, forcing him to reveal Claire’s current location. They abduct Claire, but not before she manages to call Matt and alert him to her situation. Realizing he’s responsible for her predicament, Matt springs into action, tracking down the Russians and rescuing Claire in a thrilling, stealthy sequence. As Matt tends to Claire’s injuries, their bond deepens, with Matt sharing stories of his past and finally revealing his real name.
Fisk Takes Center Stage
Fisk truly shines in this episode. After a brief introduction in the previous installment, he now takes on a more prominent role, with plenty of screen time. The tension between Fisk and Wesley’s partnership with the Russians is palpable, and Toby Leonard Moore’s portrayal of Wesley is particularly noteworthy. Fisk’s visit to the art gallery and his shy, nervous demeanor when asking out curator Vanessa adds depth to his character, setting him apart from the typical comic book villain.
The date between Fisk and Vanessa is expertly executed, showcasing their genuine connection and Fisk’s surprisingly normal side. When their date is interrupted by a Russian, Fisk’s hasty departure underscores his desire to maintain a low profile and avoid any public attention. Although his actions are meant to protect Vanessa, she’s left questioning whether she wants to see him again. Fisk accepts her decision gracefully, but the subsequent meeting with Wesley and the Russian reveals his darker side. In a brutal display of violence, Fisk beats the Russian to death, solidifying his status as a force to be reckoned with.
Exploring the Dynamics of Matt, Claire, and Fisk
This episode of Daredevil delves deeper into the lives of Fisk, Matt, and Claire. The evolving relationship between Matt and Claire is captivating, and I’m eager to see how their story unfolds and whether Claire’s character will mirror her comic book counterpart. Fisk’s storyline is off to a phenomenal start, with Vincent D’Onofrio perfectly embodying the role. The stage is set for an epic showdown between Fisk and Matt.
While Karen and Foggy’s storylines could use a bit more excitement, their chemistry is undeniable, and their scenes together are always enjoyable. The moment when Karen admits to charging office supplies to the firm is a prime example of their dynamic.
“In the Blood” is yet another fantastic episode of Daredevil, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the season. The show’s structure, which bears similarities to Arrow, is a smart choice, and I’m eager to see how it continues to develop.
Best Moments:
– Who knew Foggy almost became a butcher?
– Matt’s heartfelt confession to Claire at the end of the episode is a standout moment.
