We’ve heard very little about Melania Trump during Donald Trump’s tenure as President of the United States. It feels like it’s been 5 years already simply because each and every day the media and everyone else has something to talk about with this staff. Aside from the fact that Melania had read to children at a NYC hospital last week, it’s been very quiet on the first lady front. That all stopped yesterday when LGBT activist Dan Savage went right after the first lady.
Savage declared during his podcast Tuesday that first lady Melania Trump “is as ugly on the inside as she is pretty on the outside” for quietly supporting her husband’s policies. “I f–ing hate Melania Trump,” Mr. Savage, co-founder of the It Gets Better project, said at the top of his “Savage Lovecast” podcast.
And that’s not all Savage said about Melania. So here’s the question. Was Savage too harsh? I’ve got two answers: yes and no. Let’s explore “yes” first. If there’s one thing that people are agreeing on with Melania Trump right now it’s that she’s almost a “victim.” She seems almost scared for her life as first lady and is way in over her head in this role. She was essentially forced to do this and people are under the assumption that she’s in an extremely uncomfortable position. If that’s all true you have to feel a bit bad for her. But let’s talk about the “no” side.
She married Donald Trump in the first place and knew exactly what she was doing. She married a man for his money, sold her soul and now she’s sort of paying the consequences if you call being the FLOTUS a position of “paying the consequences. I can respect Savage’s opinion because Melania made her bed and has to lie in it. There’s only so many years that can pass in one’s life where they know they’re doing the wrong thing and I think that’s where Savage is coming from here.
