Community, in all its revived, streaming glory has been some of my favorite content over the last nine weeks. I’m already dreading the final four weeks, because that means we are one step closer to losing Community. I’m not sure a world without Community is a world in which I want to live. I’m having so much fun!
This week, on Community: Elroy, Abed, Britta, Annie, and Chang decide to take “Grifting 101,” so they can learn to grift. Jeff determines that the class is one big grift, and they initially ignore him, but later determine he is correct. So, Jeff needs everyone’s help to beat the grifting professor at his own game….which is grifting, in case you didn’t watch the episode and haven’t heard the term 1,000 times in the last hour.
I am really enjoying this season as a whole, but I especially loved this episode. It was a certain callback to the days of old Community, in which the gang was enrolled in a class, and Jeff came up with some sort of scheme. The references to the past (like Elroy’s botched re-telling of the study group origin story) make me love it all the more, and miss the days when it seemed Community would last forever. It still has a lot of heart, but most of all, it’s FUN!
One of my favorite things is characters like Britta coming to the forefront. They don’t shy away from her story with her parents, or her “origin story” (to quote myself) as a founding member of the Spanish study group. As much as I love that Britta is the worst, Gillian Jacobs is wonderfully talented, and I’m SO glad that she’s getting to be more than someone who ruins everything. Though when she ruins everything, it’s still funny.
So much of Community is little things. Throwaway jokes. Extra enjoyment for people paying attention. “Easter Eggs,” if you will. For instance, the Jim Belushi references that have been around since I can remember. Or Abed’s disconnect from reality in which everything is related to films and television. Or Jeff’s schemes. Or the fact that Chang can’t be trusted. Or Leonard favoring his middle finger. All of these things make Community feel like Community. I can’t always catch them all, but when I do, it’s one of the most rewarding feelings imaginable. It makes me feel like I am a part of something. I am a communie, through and through. This show is streets ahead, my friends.
Here are some of my favorite quotes/moments from the episode:
– Kind of enjoyed the new ragtime piano version of the theme song.
– Jeff’s face when they said “You were right.”
– “The Jim Belushi of grifts.”- Professor DeSalvo
– “You guys remember when we hugged and jumped up and down in the cafeteria?”- Jeff
-“You hit me! With a woman’s hand! You midwestern floozy!”- Professor DeSalvo
– “..four weekisodes left in a seasomester. It’s happening.”- Abed
– Leonard flipping the bird. I need to make that my desktop background.
– “Let me know if you want to press charges and..what those would be.”- the police officer
-The guy from Jeff’s gym. I hope that’s one of NBC’s midseason replacements.
All in all, another excellent installment of the Yahoo version of one of my favorite sitcoms of all-time: Community. While I don’t bet on a Season 7 of any kind, I have been stockpiling hope points, so let’s be fat dogs about this, Yahoo, and don’t let our favorite show leave us. Either way, thank you for the forthcoming four weeks.
What did you guys think of this week’s episode? Did you enjoy it as much as I did? Let us know in the comments!!
