On Lucifer‘s first season we were introduced to the devil’s right hand, the demon known as Mazikeen, or Maze to those very few she tolerates. She had a beautiful exterior, but had no filter when it came to her opinions on human feelings. The audience watched Maze as her reactions towards her charge’s intrigue with humanity summed up to annoyed at the least. Yet Mazikeen was duty bound, right up until the point where her only way home went away. Now her portrayer Lesley-Ann Brandt talks about Mazikeen’s new direction towards full-blown independence and autonomy in Season 2.
To recap, in the season finale Mazikeen used one of the feathers from Lucifer’s wings to heal his brother Amenadiel. Though that decision was her choice, she’s not happy that she sacrificed her way home. Coming to terms with that “she’s more independent. It throws Lucifer a little bit because he’s always assumed they’re going to be together” says Brandt of Maze’s attitude in the beginning of the season. Mazikeen will no longer be the person Lucifer can turn to in his distress when she finally decides she’s had enough. “She bore the cross for his choices to stay with the detective, to put himself in harm’s way…she just doesn’t care in Season 2” says Brandt, at least at first. As for her feelings towards Lucifer’s more angelic brother Amenadiel? Though D.B. Woodside says his alter ego is very much attached to Mazikeen, especially after she saved his life, don’t expect Mazikeen to reciprocate. She’ll be out to prove that she doesn’t want or need either of God’s sons.
The emergence of Lucifer and Amenadiel’s mother Charlotte on Earth is going to be the game changer for that. Mazikeen is going to be the only one other than the brothers who knows all about ‘Mom’s’ return, but beyond the fact that the two don’t like each other, Brandt isn’t spilling about Maze’s relationship with Charlotte. If anything Charlotte’s return could only serve to reinforce the fact that Maze is very much “her own woman in Season 2”. Brandt is greatly looking forward to that, as well as more interaction between characters. “You’re gonna see in general more of the supporting cast interacting with one another and more evenly spread in episodes.” Hopefully that means the next time Maze has a drink with little Trixie she’ll give the child an actual Shirley Temple.
