Comic Book Movies Aren’t Getting a Lot of Respect

For several years now, it’s been evident that several directors and other people in show business don’t hold a lot of regard for movies that are derived from comic books, either because they don’t feel like ‘real cinema’ or they don’t appear capable of showcasing actual development when it comes to their characters and plot lines. The timing of some comments had felt odd when they were made, and others appear to be little more than directors lashing out against a franchise that is doing far better than anything they’ve been putting out in recent years. While some directors might be attempting to explain why their movies aren’t doing that well, others have clarified their statements in recent years to encompass a more robust and more adequate view of the words they spoke concerning comic book movies. Martin Scorsese is one of them, as he can be credited with leading the charge that such names as Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, and several others took up to make their feelings known. It’s straightforward to say that those who have spoken out against comic book movies have ruffled a few feathers, but it hasn’t affected any franchise.

It’s straightforward to think that some directors are sore that a big franchise is eclipsing their efforts.

The downside is that Hollywood isn’t a place known for being fair, which means that it doesn’t matter what genre is being filmed, the fans will make it known which is their favorite. It’s exceedingly tough to feel sorry for any single director since their efforts have often been significant enough to keep them paid and happy with their chosen profession. Hearing them complain about how one movie or an entire franchise is ridiculous and doesn’t embody that true nature of cinema is laughable since it makes them sound like utter snobs that have forgotten what it’s like to strive to be the best and have to realize that they’re not always going to get their way and that their best might not be enough to place them at the top.

The truth is that each director that has spoken out is hard-working and has accomplished a great deal.

This is why they’re to be respected, but insofar as it pertains to their careers, since respecting people who feel the need to tear down the work of others is tricky. Some people might agree with them, and that’s their right. It’s true; there are many moments in comic book movies where reality is tossed aside to allow the most fantastic and unreal things one can imagine. But before the directors and others who have spoken out get their way, it’s essential to recall what they’ve done in their careers and how unrealistic some of their works have been. It’s a petty way to look at things unless one is willing to admit that calling out the supposed foolishness of a franchise, especially one that’s immensely popular, will prompt many people to call these directors out for their missteps.

Comic book movies are a little over the top, but they have improved.

Of course, some of them have been getting worse too, but that could mean that the audience is changing as well, and it is not necessarily an indication that the movies are getting worse with each new feature that comes out. A couple of directors have known that had they been born into this current era where they could experience these movies as young kids, they would have likely been into them. That’s an exciting sentiment considering that getting older means being set in your ways quite often and often refusing to budge when your mind has been made up. Some folks are flexible as they age, but others tend to stick to their guns, so to speak, and don’t want to be told they’re wrong. The reality about comic book movies is that they’re not often made to be severe unless the story calls for it, and the fantastical nature of these movies is necessary to tell the story.

There won’t likely be a shortage of comic book movies.

As long as people are willing to spend money on a ticket, comic book movies will continue to be made since the plain truth is that kids are a huge reason they’re made in the first place. The directors who decide to speak out about comic book movies will have to grin and bear it and do what they can to gain and keep their fans. Hollywood isn’t fair, remember? It’s a lesson some folks need to be reminded of sometimes.

A cinematic variety is preferable to a narrow view of what’s acceptable.
