For over a year, The Chosen season 4 was all new and old fans of the series could talk about. The Dallas Jenkins-created historical drama has been based on one of the greatest stories ever told—the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. Although it is a known story to billions of people, The Chosen’s success has been due to its ability to make it relatable to a modern audience.
The Chosen season 4 premiered theatrically on February 1, 2024. The season was available for streaming on June 2, 2024, with its finale aired on June 30, 2024. Season 4 picked up from where it left off in season 3, bringing audiences closer to the inevitable end of Jesus’s life on earth. Here’s a breakdown of The Chosen season 4.
The Chosen Season 4 Introduces Violence In The Series
With the season pushing closer to Jesus’ betrayal and death, things quickly heat up. Audiences were introduced to the first real violent scenes in season 4. In episode 3 (“Moon to Blood”), Jesus gets confrontational towards the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, pointing out how much they’ve focused on man-made traditions and ritual purity. As they trade words with Jesus, the crowd soon gets agitated. A few minutes later, Quintus’s blade accidentally stabs and kills Thomas’s betrothed, Ramah.
Irrespective of opinions on the introduction of violence in The Chosen, there’s no denying the brilliance the producers and writers have done in fleshing out background stories. Adapted for a modern audience and stretched out as a television series, it’s understandable why it’s important to focus on several subplots occasionally. The series is now at a point where the Pharisees have allied with the Romans to eliminate a common threat.
Realistically, violent clashes like this would have occurred, especially as a story based on real-life events. While several viewers might argue it is unnecessary, it does help build the background plot properly for a modern audience. The Chosen season 4 is a pivotal season in the series as it focuses on rising conflicts and dangers from Jesus’s enemies. It is the first true foreshadowing of Jesus’s imminent death. This violence is important to the plot to give a better understanding of the events leading to the death.
The Chosen Season 4 Stays Grounded In the Bible Story
So far, The Chosen has appealed to a larger audience of believers in the Biblical story of Jesus’s life and ministry. Also, like in the previous seasons, the show’s producers and writers have taken the liberty of including narratives/subplots outside of Biblical reports. However, like other seasons, season 4 focuses on portraying events as told in the Bible. With the synoptic gospels as source material, The Chosen season 4 cleverly incorporates the known differences in narration in the gospels.
A good example is the story of Salome, James, and John about having influence and recognition as Jesus’s followers. According to the gospel of Matthew (Chapter 20, verse 20), it was Salome who approached Jesus to ask him to elevate her sons in his Kingdom. However, in the gospel of Mark (Chapter 10, verse 35), James and John ask Jesus directly. The Chosen season 4 provided hints at the possibility of both scenarios taking place.
Salome tells her sons to ask Jesus to elevate them to his Kingdom. Although the sons seem hesitant at first, Salome boldly remarks (like any mother would) that she would speak to Jesus about it if they don’t. James and John quickly try to discourage her by insisting they would do it themselves. At this point, the possibility of both accounts happening is subject to narration.
Jonathan Roumie Portrays An Emotional Jesus In Season 4
The “Jesus wept” scripture in the Bible is one of the few times Jesus is shown showing deep emotions. In several other productions about Jesus, little emphasis has been given to this moment, especially considering that a more popular miracle (raising Lazarus from the dead) is about to occur. However, The Chosen season 4 emphasized Jesus’ reaction to Lazarus’s death. Judging by the number of comments and mentions the scene received from viewers, it is undoubtedly the most emotional scene so far in The Chosen. Without mincing words, Jonathan Roumie was exceptional in his performance.
The Chosen Season 4 Box Office Numbers
The Chosen season 4 isn’t the first in the series to have been released in theaters, but it became the first full-season release. Season 4 was released in domestic theaters in three batches (episodes 1–3, 4–6, and 7–8). What better measure of success than with the impressive Box Office earnings of season 4?
The season’s first release (episodes 1–3) grossed $14.2 million. The second batch, released two weeks later, earned $8.8 million, with the finale episodes raking in $6.7 million. This means The Chosen season 4 earned an impressive $29.7 million at the Box Office before streaming began in June 2024. With The Chosen season 4 receiving amazing reviews, here’s more on Jonathan Roumie, the actor who plays Jesus in the TV show.
