Casting the Perfect Game of Thrones Movie

Casting the Perfect Game of Thrones Movie

Game of Thrones is coming to a close. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that HBO has been looking into the possibilities for a movie based on the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise for some time. However, the problem isn’t finding potential options so much as the fact that there are a number of them.

For example, the most obvious choice would be a movie based on Robert’s Rebellion, which has a much stronger connection to the events shown on Game of Thrones than the other possibilities out there. However, Robert’s Rebellion has a clear beginning and end, meaning that there is a limit to how much its events can be stretched to provide source material for movies. As a result, another option is the Dunk and Egg series, which covers the exploits of Aegon V and his future Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall. Since each installment in the series is a complete story on its own while still having relevance for an overall narrative, it is the perfect choice for a movie franchise rather than a stand-alone movie. Finally, for something similar to the political aspect of Game of Thrones, there was the Dance of the Dragons, which was when dragons devastated much of Westeros as House Targaryen split into the Blacks and the Greens because of a contested succession.

Who Would Be the Perfect Actors for a Game of Thrones Movie?

Some of the characters who would have to appear in a movie based on Robert’s Rebellion have appeared in Game of Thrones, but their ages make their reprisal of the role improbable. For example, Mark Addy played Robert Baratheon as fat, debauched, middle-aged king that he became, but he would not be able to play him as the young pretender who seemed as though a hero out of song. Instead, some people have suggested Henry Cavill, who is most recognizable as Clark Kent in the recent Superman movies. Opposite Robert was Rhaegar Targaryen, who started the entire chain of events by running off with Robert’s fiancee, Lyanna Stark.

Often, fans suggest someone delicate-seeming for the role, which doesn’t fit the description of the character as having been a capable warrior in his own right with “iron tones” to his voice. In fact, the one canon artistic depiction of Rhaegar actually bears a slight resemblance to Chris Hemsworth of Thor fame. Finally, it is amusing to note that Maisie Williams would have been perfect for the role of Lyanna Stark because her character was said to have resembled her aunt to an incredible extent, but under the circumstances, that casting choice is impossible because it would cause too much confusion in movie-goers for it to be worth it.

Other possibilities for a Game of Thrones movie would need other casting choices. For example, a young Tom Hanks would have been perfect for Ser Duncan the Tall, who needs to look tall, lanky, good-natured, and occasionally foolish, but assuming that a hypothetical movie franchise centered around Dunk and Egg extended into the duo’s later exploits, current Tom Hanks would not be a bad choice either. In contrast, Aegon would almost certainly have to be a relative unknown because the character is supposed to be a boy at the start of the series.

Finally, some people have suggested Margot Robbie for Rhaenyra Targaryen, who was the Black claimant during the Dance of the Dragon, while other people have suggested Johnny Depp for Daemon Targaryen, who was her husband as well as her main champion in the war. Certainly if nothing else, Depp has the eccentricity as well as the roguish charm needed to play the dragon-riding prince who moonlighted as a pirate king at one point in his life.
