Casting an Anne Rice Movie Biopic

Casting an Anne Rice Movie Biopic

Anne Rice is a very interesting person to be quite honest. She’s lived a rather unremarkable life compared to many others if you read her biography, but she’s still managed to become one of the most interesting authors of this era. Her most famous novel, Interview With A Vampire, was written in the 1970’s and did not become a motion picture film until the 1990’s. Yet when it did hit the theaters it became almost as much of a hit as the book did when it was released to the shelves. Her other books have received only slightly less acclaim but her popularity has soared despite this. The story she began gained something of a cult following for quite a while and in its own way redefined the vampire genre once again.

What is truly interesting about Rice is that not long before reclaiming her Catholic roots she renounced her vampire novels and quit having anything to do with them. This shocked readers and fans alike and sent a ripple throughout the entire fan base. Some up and left, perhaps even thinking that she had been a poser, a fake trying to cash in on the genre, while others might have been devastated that one of their favorite authors would simply turn her back on them.

To be honest, the entire genre in which she was writing could have been experiencing a serious decline as it’s done in the past. It might not be the reason that Rice left, but there are a few theories that might work for a biopic.

Her return to her Catholic roots would not allow for the continued writings that had made her so famous.

This doesn’t seem likely but it could be an excuse and a plot point to drive home during a film. To be quite honest she dealt with quite a few “interesting” subjects in her stories and it could have gnawed at her in a way that left her uncomfortable.

Director – Frank Darabont

He’s already shown he can take a rather uninteresting subject and make something from it. He was great for The Walking Dead until he was pushed aside. Allowing him to tell Anne Rice’s story, with her there to corroborate with of course, could lead to a very interesting film. If nothing else it would add a bit of very real-feeling tragedy and drama to her life during the time between when she abandoned the vampire novels and when she finally gave up on Christianity.

Anne Rice – Sally Fields

Sally has the right look, the height, and the acting chops to pull this off. There might be a few other women that could do this but Sally Fields comes immediately to mind when this role pops up. She could bring some the needed professionalism and verve to the role to make it believable and help it to stand out.

The rest of the cast would be fairly easy to bring in as they would be a small part of the movie overall and likely there and gone within a few scenes. This film would be largely about Anne and what it took to get her to where she’s at now.
