Showtime’s comedy-drama Californication and its cast entertained audiences for 7 successful seasons. The show premiered on August 13, 2007, and aired originally, over 84 episodes, with its finale on June 29, 2014. 2024 marked the tenth anniversary since its finale.
The Emmy Award-winning TV show centered around a troubled novelist, Hank Moody, who moves to California and suffers from writer’s block. It also detailed his life as he juggled his career, relationships, and personal demons. A decade later, here’s the Californication cast and what they’ve been up to in their careers.
David Duchovny as Henry James “Hank” Moody
American actor, writer, producer, and musician David Duchovny played the lead character Henry James “Hank” Moody in Californication. Hank’s struggles with various vices, including alcohol and sex addiction, often lead him into tumultuous romantic relationships and complicated situations. David Duchovny took a break from acting in 2017 to focus on his novelist and singer/songwriter career.
Since then, he has released three studio albums and published three additional novels. Duchovny returned to acting in the 2020s and has raked up several credits. He played the father, Arnold, in You People and appeared in the 2024 drama Adam the First. Duchovny also appeared in 3 episodes of The Sympathizer as Ryan Glenn and Thespian.
Natascha McElhone as Karen Van Der Beek
Karen Van Der Beek was the former long-time girlfriend and mother of Hank Moody’s daughter, Becca. Karen is portrayed as an intelligent, independent, compassionate woman who struggles with her complicated feelings for Hank. Throughout the series, she grapples with her desires and the challenges of co-parenting while pursuing her career and personal fulfillment.
English actress Natascha McElhone portrayed Karen Van Der Beek’s character. She last appeared in a movie in 2021, playing the eponymous character Carmen in the drama Carmen. Natascha McElhone’s most recent acting credits are portraying Penelope Knatchbull, Lady Romsey on Netflix’s The Crown, and being cast as a series regular in Hotel Portofino (as Bella Ainsworth) and Halo (as Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey).
Madeleine Martin as Rebecca “Becca” Moody
14-year-old Madeleine Martin played 12-year-old Rebecca “Becca” Moody at the start of Californication. Becca is the daughter of the main character, Hank Moody, who is portrayed as a very intelligent, mature, and independent teenager. Her storyline follows her struggles with normal teenage issues such as relationships, school, and her parents’ tumultuous relationship. Madeleine Martin has not worked on the big screen since Californication ended but has had a few projects on television. She currently voices Fionna on Max’s adult animated series Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.
Evan Handler as Charlie Runkle
Although he played a supporting character, Evan Handler breathed like into the Charlie Runkle character in a way only he knew how to. Charlie is Hank Moody’s best friend and agent, who gets caught in wild and crazy situations. He’s a loyal friend to Hank, but he also has his own struggles, particularly in his romantic and professional life. Evan Handler hasn’t done much in movies in the last decade. However, he has had a busy schedule on television. Handler played District Attorney Jacob Warner in Power (2019–2020) and plays Harry Goldenblatt in And Just Like That….
Pamela Adlon as Marcy Runkle
Introduced in Californication season 1 in a recurring role, the Marcy Runkle character was upgraded to the main cast from season 2. Pamela Adlon played the character, portraying her as a sharp-witted and sassy woman who’s not afraid to speak her mind. Marcy is also known for her tumultuous relationship with her on-again, off-again husband, Charlie Runkle. Unsurprisingly, like her husband, Charlie, Marcy quickly became a fan favorite. Pamela Adlon continues to have an impressive career as a live-action actor and voice-over actor.
Pamela Adlon’s last movie voice role was as Sandy in the 2023 Netflix animated musical comedy Leo. In television, she voiced Leah Stein-Torres in The Ghost and Molly McGee (2021–2024), Sonya in Human Resources (2022), and Nordle Ampersand in Hamster & Gretel. Adlon also starred in Bumblebee (2018), The King of Staten Island (2020), This Is Us (2020), and History of the World, Part II (2023). She also made her feature directorial debut with Babes in 2024. However, it isn’t her first time working off-screen, as she has earned a reputation as a writer and producer.
