The characters on “The Big Bang Theory” have come a long way in their evolution. This is particularly true of Howard, Sheldon and Amy Farrah Fowler. When Amy first arrived she was dry with no sense of humor and seemed to be void of emotions. She reminded viewers of a human computer that didn’t really get the gist of humor or sarcasm. Her character has evolved and blossomed in a way that makes her barely recognizable. She’s amazingly different that when she first appeared on Big Bang. We have some ideas on what led to this wonderful transformation.
Amy in the beginning
Amy was plain and emotionless. We couldn’t tell much about her personality because she didn’t seem to have one. She acted more like a robot than a human being. She was the discovery of Howard and Raj. They found her in an online dating service because they were looking for a good match for their friend Sheldon. Amy is a neurobiologist with a PhD and they thought that they had found his perfect match. She agreed to meet Sheldon because she had promised her mother that she would go on a minimum of one date a year in order to be able to use her mom’s George Forman grill.
Her first thoughts on romance
The character made the statement “I find the notion of romantic love to be an unnecesesary cultural construct that adds no value to human relationships..” Sheldon held the same values and it seemed like a perfect match in a cold and clinical way. It wasn’t long before Amy revisited her statement and said “part of me wants more.” This time there was real emotion in her eyes that wasn’t there before.
Amy starts to loosen up
Amy gradually started to change. She began to make attempts at humor and even started showing romantic feelings for Sheldon. Her relationship with her new friend Penny is partly responsible. Penny served as a role model for Amy and through example taught her how to be more feminine and that romance and even sex were wonderful necessities of life.
Intimacy heats up
It appeared that the hormones within Amy started to become much more active as she fell more in love with Sheldon. She wanted more intimacy but he kept her at bay. She persevered and eventually convinced him to start showing affection physically. This was an about-face for both characters and viewers loved it.

Amy started caring more about her appearance and even started using makeup. She has come full circle and has finally allowed her true personality to shine through. It seems that Penny was the one person who allowed her to be herself. It could be the fact that Penny is not a highly pressured intellectual and this gives Amy a break from that environment of expectations. Penny is cool and relaxed and Amy can feel free to be herself around her.
Final thoughts
The transformation of Amy has been nothing short of amazing. The character has become funnier and more fun for the others to be around. She has grown as a person and learned how to express herself and show emotions a little better. She’s even influencing Sheldon to come out of his shell a little more.
