It’s kind of interesting to think that Regina Hall almost went into writing or journalism at one point, and would have gladly been a professional student had she been given the chance. There’s nothing to say against that since being able to stay in school and continually learn is actually kind of fun if you get to dictate which classes you take and what you learn. But eventually she did have a change of heart and moved into acting after a while. Since then she’s been able to stick around for a while and has been in quite a few movies that have shown her to be a very funny but also serious individual that’s been able to showcase the kind of talent that’s insanely versatile and allows her to entertain a broad range of roles that have thus far made her into the star she currently is. Given that she’s in her late 40s she’s done quite a bit, but hopefully she’ll have a lot more to give.
Here are her five best movies.
5. About Last Night
Relationships, huh boy. They go one way then they go another it feels like, but they tend to make a person see what’s really a priority after a while since they do tend to rearrange the way we look at things now and again. When a person gets involved with another person the different ideas, mannerisms, and even beliefs we had as a single person tend to melt away after a while since the bonding of two people tends to break things down, eliminate walls, and at the same time come up against boundaries that aren’t meant to be crossed right away. With all that being said it’s kind of hard to realize what foot to stand on at times when it comes to relationships, but eventually it all gets sorted out.
4. When the Bough Breaks
I kind of wonder if Ijeoma Oluo of The Stranger was watching the same movie as anyone else since a lot of people seemed to like this movie given that it was based on something that a lot of people of all colors and races tend to deal with, infertility. If you’re going to focus on anything other than the story then you might find a dozen different things that you don’t like, but seriously if you want to focus on a good story that’s a little out there and over the top but still enough to be entertained by then it might be right up your alley. The idea of focusing on ‘a waste of talent’ because of things that a person doesn’t like in a movie is kind of easy, but it does detract from the overall story.
3. The Hate U Give
There’s been an number of movies that could be called incendiary or revolutionary depending on how one looks at them but with this movie it would seem that the message trying to be pushed is just as dependent upon one’s views. Richard Brody of The New Yorker is pretty even-handed with his estimation of this movie and in some ways it’s kind of hard to be since the content is enough to make some peoples’ blood burn while others might try to look past the obvious commentary. All in all though this is a powerful movie that was created to get a reaction and it did just that, so mission accomplished.
2. Little
Bullying is a big problem and has been for, well, ever. The idea that it’s anything new and that it’s any more damaging in this day and age has largely to do with the fact that we seem to have forgotten how to deal with it like we used to. But in this case the self-realization that comes to Jordan after a while is a positive note since it reminds her that just because she was bullied doesn’t mean that she has the right to bully others once she’s reached the top of her game. Thankfully it does show a good lesson and it does show how a person can possibly change their ways after seeing just what happens when bullying is taken too far.
1. Scary Movie
This is one of the funniest movies in history and yes, it does have a lot of toilet humor and gags that are anything but sensitive. But that’s what makes it so great to be honest since it took off and did what it wanted without taking into account just what it was going to do to anyone that watched it. Why? It’s a long-running list of jokes and gags that were designed for people to laugh at and not take offense at. It’s a movie that crosses the line more than once and even dances on it a time or two in an effort to simply have fun and be engaging.
Oh yes, she’s a good actress, and someone that has a lot more to give.
