It was a classic hit in 1977 and the song will hold up until the end of time. “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees will always go down as the song John Travolta struts to in Saturday Night Fever. That memorable scene of Travolta walking down the street acting cool and fashionable has been mimicked time and time again in movies and television and remains a classic to this day. The song itself is almost an anthem for confidence and bravado. If you’re walking down the street and start blasting “Stayin’ Alive” it’s like you’re put into another dimension of cool and you feel like nothing can stop you. When you’re down on your luck, just pop on “Stayin’ Alive” and it’ll keep you going.
Speaking of which, it turns out that “Stayin’ Alive” might actually save your life as well, literally. The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and advertising agency Seiden have released a Spotify playlist of songs with around 100 beats per minute (bpm) tempo, which is considered the ideal rate for administering chest compressions during CPR.
In the playlist are apt life saving musical hits like “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees as mentioned above, “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, and “Rock Your Body” by Justin Timberlake. The most odd choice however, is the inclusion of “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen. Looks like someone has a pretty twisted sense of humor.
We of course have the video of “Stayin’ Alive” below and I encourage you to check out that CPR page. It’s worth a few minutes of your time.
