The CBS sitcom Becker and its hilarious cast were an audience favorite after it premiered on November 2, 1998. Becker was the last new comedy show added to CBS’s lineup in 1998. The show aired for six seasons, with its finale broadcast on January 28, 2004.
The show centered around its eponymous character, John Becker, a misanthropic doctor living and practicing in the Bronx. Dr. Becker operates a small practice in the borough but is easily irritated by everything and everyone, from his workers, patients, friends, and neighbors. As a favorite classic of the late 90s to mid-2000s, here are the top Becker cast and where they are today.
Ted Danson as Dr. John Becker
Popular television actor Ted Danson led the Becker cast as Dr. John Becker, a talented but grumpy doctor with a no-nonsense approach to medicine and life. Ted Danson has starred in several movies and TV shows in the last two decades. However, his last feature movie was in 2018, in which he played Dave in the music comedy-drama Hearts Beat Loud.
Although he hasn’t had a project on the big screen since Becker, Danson has worked consistently on television. Besides his voice roles in American Dad! (2015–2020) and Mulligan (2023), Danson guest-starred and had recurring roles in several other TV shows. He appeared in The Good Place (2016–2020), The Orville (2019–2022), Mr. Mayor (2021–2022), and Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000–2024).
Hattie Winston as Margaret Wyborn
Margaret Wyborn was a nurse who worked alongside Dr. John Becker at his Bronx hospital. Margaret was known for her no-nonsense attitude and compassionate nature, often providing a voice of reason to the misanthropic, grumpy Dr. Becker. Film, television, and Broadway actress Hattie Winston played Margaret Wyborn in Becker, appearing in all episodes of the show. Unlike Ted Danson, Hattie Winston hasn’t had an active career in recent years. Her last movie credit was in 2003, a year before Becker’s finale.
Although she continued to work in television in guest appearances, it wasn’t until 2012 that she landed her next major role. She was cast as Sister Coriann Pearly in a recurring role in The Soul Man. She exited the show in its penultimate season. Since then, Hattie Winston has shied away from the public and not starred in any major acting production. However, she appeared in the 2020 short film Little Brother as Mrs. Webb.
Shawnee Smith as Linda
Besides Ted Danson’s character, actress Shawnee Smith was one of the three characters to appear in every episode of Becker. Shawnee Smith joined the Becker cast as Linda, Dr. Becker’s incompetent receptionist at the hospital. In the same 2004 that Becker ended, Shawnee Smith was cast as Amanda Young in the Saw film franchise.
Shawnee Smith appeared in the first movie, Saw, released theatrically in October 2004. Since then, Smith has reprised the character in four other Saw movies. She last portrayed the character in the tenth installment, Saw X, in 2023. In 2024, she played Moira Cole in the horror thriller Bloodline Killer. On television, Smith returned to the small screen in 2023 after an almost ten-year break. After playing Jennifer Goodson in Anger Management (2012–2014), Smith portrayed Ramona in a recurring role in City on Fire in 2023.
Alex Désert as Jake Malinak
Actor and musician Alex Désert played Jake Malinak. The character is a blind newsstand operator and a good friend of the main character, Dr. John Becker. Jake was often portrayed as having a great sense of humor and a positive outlook on life despite his blindness. Besides starring in several short films, Alex Désert hasn’t done much on the big screen.
He continued working on television projects, landing a few major and guest-starring roles. In 2020, Alex Désert replaced Hank Azaria in voicing Carl Carlson in The Simpsons. Since then, Désert has also voiced other characters on the show. He also guest-starred in an episode of Fire Country as Rudy in 2024.
Terry Farrell as Regina ‘Reggie’ Kostas
Actress and fashion model Terry Farrell joined the Becker cast as Regina “Reggie” Kostas. She was part of the original cast and worked as a cashier in the diner. At some point, she was Dr. Becker’s love interest. Terry Farrell left Becker after season 4. Many viewers argued her exit marked the end of the show. Unlike the other cast members, Terry Farrell hasn’t had many acting credits since her exit from Becker. Farrell’s last acting credit was in 2019 in the science fiction movie The Circuit: Star Crew. She’s also credited with voicing Dr. Grey in the Elsie video game.
Saverio Guerra as Bob
The Bob character was introduced in a recurring role in seasons 1 and 2. Bob was one of the regulars at the diner where Dr. Becker and the other main characters often hung out. Bob provided some comic relief and was known for his quirky personality and colorful anecdotes. Actor Saverio Guerra played the character of Bob. After Becker, Guerra’s most notable credit has been playing Mocha Joe as a recurring character on Curb Your Enthusiasm from 2009 to 2024.
Nancy Travis as Christine “Chris” Connor
Christine “Chris” Connor’s character was introduced in Becker season 4 in a guest appearance. She was Dr. Becker’s new neighbor. Unlike Dr. Becker, Chris was optimistic and cheerful. Chris was upgraded to a main role in season 5 and became a love interest of Dr. Becker. Actress Nancy Travis played the character, appearing in 38 episodes of Becker from 2002 to 2004.
After Becker had ended, Nancy Travis continued working on film and television projects. She’s famous for playing Vanessa Baxter in Last Man Standing from 2011 to 2021. She recently starred as Isabel McMurray in Ride in 2023 and Barbara in the 2024 movie Ordinary Angels.
