The second installment to Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning limited series has set its premiere date. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story will premiere on FX on Wednesday, January 17 at 10PM ET/PT. It was announced today by the network.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story will explore the murder of famous fashion designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, based on Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. It is expected to be consists of ten episodes, just like the first installment.
Edgar Ramirez, Penelope Cruz, Ricky Martin and Darren Criss star in the show. Ramirez will play Gianni Versace. Cruz will play his sister Donatella while Martin will play his lover Antonio D’Amico. Criss, who previously worked with Murphy before on Glee, will play Andrew Cunanan. Max Greenfield, Annaleigh Ashford, Will Chase and Finn Wittrock also co-star in the show.
Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Alexis Martin Woodall, Dan Minahan and Tom Rob Smith serve as the executive producers of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Smith also serves as the writer of the series while Murphy directed the premiere episode. The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions.
The first installment of American Crime Story, subtitled The People v. O.J. Simpson, tackled the murder trial of O.J. Simpson. The show aired last year to critical acclaim and won several awards including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series. Sarah Paulson, Courtney B. Vance, Cuba Gooding Jr., John Travolta, Sterling K. Brown and David Schwimmer starred in the show. Paulson, Vance, and Brown won their respective Emmys for the show as well.
The show has also announced its third installment, titled Katrina, which will tackle the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina with Sheri Frink’s book Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital as its source material. Paulson will star again, playing the role of Dr. Anna Pou. It was previously set as the second installment. It is expected to start production by spring next year.
