“Live from Hollywood; it’s America’s Got Talent!” Yes, folks, the show is now live. The fate of the acts that will perform falls into the hands of America as the country votes for their favourites. There were some really good acts tonight, but there are some that just didn’t step it up from their previous performances.
The dance group, Outlawz’s performance, was subpar. The whole choreography felt off, and I wasn’t too sure about their Ghostbusters inspired costumes. Did they come up with that themselves or did the Wardrobe Department help them? If the latter, why did they choose such a costume for them? What was the story behind the performance?
Another act that felt off was Daniel Joyner’s. His song choice, though passable, did not impress Simon. The show creator/judge commented that Joyner’s act felt like a lollipop (whatever that means) and that the latter could do better should he get the chance to go to the semi-finals.
A couple of great acts felt a little slow in this first live show. Jon Dorenbo’s act was fantastic and mind-blowing, but the whole thing took too long. I liked his pre-live show performance better than this one. If America votes for him, I hope that he can think of something to make his magic better regarding execution and speed. No one wants to see a magic act in Vegas just to sit there and think when the surprise is going to appear.
Tape Face’s act is another great act that felt a bit slow. The bit from the movie Ghost he did with Heidi Klum was chuckle-worthy. When he got Nick Cannon (nice man-bun by the way) to come onto the stage, however, that’s when things started to go downhill. Yes, I was laughing my head off when Madonna songs would play every time Nick put on the sunglasses, but the end of the act confused me greatly. It’s just Nick and Tape Face nodding along to the music with the both of them wearing sunglasses. What was the point of that, can someone clear this up for me?
I loved Jayna Brown’s performance of Ed Sheeran’s song Make It Rain. Her voice is strong and powerful. Makes me feel jealous that she can sing better than me (not that I can sing, but I try). It must have been nerve-wracking for her to be the first act of the night, but she didn’t show it so good on her. Laura Bretan’s performance was on point as well. Her song choice gave me goosebumps as I listened to her belt out “The Prayer”. I almost stood up and applauded like the judges did when Laura finished her song, emphasis on the almost. Tonight’s episode will be the first results show. Past winners Paul Zerdin and Mat Franco will return to perform. I can’t wait until this evening!
