Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Episode 18 Review: “The Singularity”
After being infected by Hive last week and destroying S.H.I.E.L.D.’s base, this week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. picks up right where we left off as Daisy is now with Hive while Coulson and his team are trying to save her and stop Hive.
Last year, me and a fellow TV Overmind colleague did a piece together on how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should use the Secret Warriors the best and what characters they should introduce in the third season. We got Yo-Yo/Slingshot in the second half of the season and honestly, I wasn’t sure if we were getting any more of them, other than one that they have teased upon. That is why it was such a pleasant surprise when it was revealed that talky James was in fact Marvel’s Hellfire, another member of the Secret Warriors. I will admit that I had read some speculation online, but I wasn’t sure if it would happen.
However, it did and it was done in a very neat manner with Hive and Daisy pretty much forcing him to go through Terrigenesis before he got Hive-d. It was hilarious seeing him trying to find himself a codename as he was going through several options, to the point where I thought he would suggest “Firestorm” and then say some line how it is “probably” already taken a.k.a. Firestorm being a DC character. Hopefully when Hive’s terror is over, he is a character that may stick around as I really do hope they give the Secret Warriors another go.
Hive and Daisy’s interaction was way different than I expected because I apparently misunderstood how this infection completely worked. I thought it was some form of mind-control or what not, but the way Hive pulls them in, made this story a lot more interesting because it shows that whoever is under his “control”, isn’t brain-washed. The biggest question now is what and how will cure them from this addiction that they are under, unless it is simply killing Hive once and for all, which is easier said than done. The scene when Hive is channeling Will to Simmons was all sorts of heartbreaking as she can’t catch a break.
There were a lot of good FitzSimmons moments in this episode and while I haven’t been quite sure how I feel about their romantic turn, I’m getting behind it more and more. Although knowing that this is a Whedon-based show, a happy ending for these two may not be something easy to get, but one can hope they will get it, right? Fingers crossed because these two have been put through enough and if any couple on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should get a happy ending, it is absolutely FitzSimmons.
Overall, “The Singularity” was a very good follow-up to what happened in last week’s episode which was going to be tough to top, but yet they were able to keep in pair with it. Things are really starting to come to a head as we approach the end of the season and with Daisy’s warning to Fitz that someone on S.H.I.E.L.D., these next few weeks of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be quite interesting to follow.
