This week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was a solid one, with Coulson having to team up with Ward; however, this episode had some moments that really decreased the quality of it as a whole.
I’m going to get straight to my biggest issue with the episode and it’s hard to even type it out because she has never frustrated me this way. For the first time in the entire series, Melinda May actually did something unbelievably stupid by disrespecting Simmons’ wish to keep the secret about the toolbox for herself and instead went to Bobbi to tell her the entire situation. And what was the reason? Oh, it was the typical “they know what they are doing, I’m doing this do protect you” crap that we see every once in a while in every show, even from the best of characters. It was simply idiotic, and I 100% understood Simmons’ anger because I’m sure that this will, in one way or another, backfire badly on May and Simmons.
Also, in last night’s episode, Coulson and his team turned to Ward and Agent 33 for a reluctant team-up, and it was an interesting one, to say the least. I can only imagine how much fun Brett Dalton and Clark Gregg must have had shooting this episode because of where their characters have ended up and what they are now. We got the early tie-ins to Avengers: Age of Ultron through the character of Dr. List from Captain America: The Winter Solider (he was working with Baron Van Strucker, who will be a secondary antagonist in the upcoming Avengers sequel), who showed up in this episode. I’m calling it right now: we will see Baron in some capacity in the next episode, or at least for a little bit in the episodes after the film has been released.
“The Frenemy of My Enemy” also continued Skye’s new bonding with her father Cal, and the more I’m see of Kyle MacLachlan as Cal, the more I love it. It was heartbreaking to watch him admit that he used to be sanely stable at one point in his life and that his path to being a villain wasn’t really a choice he got to make. Chloe Bennet and MacLachlan fit so well together as father/daughter on the screen that it was an enormous bummer when it all got ruined because of Hydra crashing in. Also, because of them, Deathlok and Lincoln have now been taken by them. Is it just me or do the good guys need to get a win pretty soon before it starts to feel old, as we constantly are watching the heroes lose? I’m pretty sure I’m not alone on this one.
The post-credit scene of this week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. featured Coulson turning himself in to Bobbi and Mack, as they took him back to the base. Coulson, what are you up to?
Other than my big frustration with May, this was a solid episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it had some really good moments that ended way too quickly. Only two more episodes before the two-hour season finale on May 12!
