It’s kind of hard to say that Nicolas Cage has any bad roles but in the spirit of the article those roles below are probably the worst he’s had, which means they’re not the kind of thing that would elevate him all that much in the eyes of the audience. They’re fun to watch and all, but Cage seems to get into his character just a little too much, which is an odd thing to say since that’s what most people pay to see. But in this case some of these roles see him going above and beyond the level of crazy that you normally see him display, or just give him an appearance that isn’t quite on the mark.
Seriously, all these are great, but they’re still among his worst roles.
5. Face/Off-Castor Troy/Sean Archer
There’s something about Cage that says he can be a tough guy, but perhaps not so much the slick and polished assassin that has no trouble blowing up most of Los Angeles just because he’s being paid to do so. Plus the dynamic he had with John Travolta seemed kind of sketchy at best, as though they were on the same page but still didn’t fit as neatly as they could have. If he’d toned it down a little bit on the crazy he might have made it work a lot better. But it would have been a different movie for certain.
4. Con Air-Cameron Poe
Cameron Poe was tough, there were no doubts about that, but showing off the good ol’ boy that was polite and said ‘please and thank you’ even to the bad guys made him seem kind of like a pushover. He wasn’t of course, but this almost pushed him to the brink of being a big dumb bohunk that really knew how to fight and had at least enough brains to get around. The film was entertaining though.
3. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance-Johnny Blaze
If you go back to the old comics you’ll see that Ghost Rider wasn’t as calm and composed as he is now. At one point the Rider was a crazed demon out for vengeance wherever he could get it, and that seems to be the feel of this movie. Unfortunately the need for that desperation kind of threw people for a loop since it made Cage look absolutely nuts when really he could have dialed it back a bit and still kept the desperation.
2. The Rock-Stanley Goodspeed
This is another movie where being the guy that seems like he could be tough but is really kind of more low-key kind of backfired on him. Stanley is a chemical guy that works for the FBI and has to go along with an incursion into Alcatraz of all places to diffuse several rockets armed with one of the most deadly gases known to mankind. Unfortunately for him Sean Connery kind of pulls out his awesome persona and steals the show a lot of times, so it’s hard to really get into Cage in this one.
1. The Wicker Man-Edward Malus
This was, unfortunately, a flop from the get. The premise and the story line isn’t all that bad, but the acting was horrible on the part of most of the people in it the movie. It moved along at a snail’s pace and the development was so glacial at one moment and so swift at another that people might have needed to rewind the movie just to see what they’d missed.
Honestly they didn’t miss much.
