A Jeffrey Epstein Limited Series is in the Works at HBO

Television shows have mainly focused on giving us a dose of entertainment, but sometimes, real-life stories can help enlighten the public on many issues plaguing society. The late Jeffery Epstein spent his last days in prison, with almost everyone hating him due to the sexual abuse and human trafficking charges. Now that he is dead, his side of the story may never come to light. However, many journalists had already done their investigations, with some claiming to have talked to Jeffery. As a result, several Jeffery Epstein series are in the works, so let’s look at the one HBO is producing.

It is an adaptation from a book

One investigative reporter, Julie K. Brown, reported the many sex abuse incidents that led to the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein. Her in-depth coverage of the events resulted in Julie signing a deal to publish a book that will expose everything that the late financier who fell from glory did. The publishers said the upcoming book, which is yet to have a title or release date, will ensure readers worldwide get access to the truth behind the scandal.

Adam McKay is not waiting until the book is released for him to start developing a series based on it. Instead, Julie’s articles drove him to start working on the limited series that is also yet to have a title. Adam will be the executive producer but will engage the help of Julie to co-executive produce since it is all about her work. However, the fact that Adam has begun working on the series before the release of the book has drawn criticism as some people think it is too early. As Fortune reports, people are worried that the limited series may not capture the entire story if developments are made when filming has already started.

It is not the first series about Jeffery Epstein

HBO is not the only one looking to cash in through a series about the disgraced financier. Sony is also working on a miniseries, based in “Trafficking” by Conchita Sarnoff. The miniseries will concentrate on Jeffrey’s human trafficking crimes since Sony has optioned the book by Conchita. According to Deadline, by September 2019, the studio was already searching for a writer. Other people involved in the limited series production include Conchita as the executive producer along with Brian Medavore, Judith Vernon, and Edwin More. Conchita alleges to have conducted thorough research with Jeffrey’s victims and Jeffrey himself, along with other top-ranking government officials.

Lifetime is also interested in letting the viewers know of Jeffrey’s charges through a docu-series titled “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein.” The announcement about the series came even before Jeffrey’s death, perhaps having been encouraged by the positive reception of “Surviving R. Kelly” that was nominated for an Emmy award. The series is yet to have a release date. The plot revolves around how Jeffrey used his connections to influential people to continue with his predatory behavior despite being registered as a sex offender in 2008.

It is the first project under Adam’s deal with HBO

Adam has already showcased his excellent production and directing talents, so it is no surprise that HBO wanted to retain him. He, therefore, signed a new deal with HBO and HBO max lasting five years. It is not clear how much the agreement is worth, but Adam could not wait to get to work through this limited series. The president of HBO programming, Casey Bloys, also announced that they were glad to continue the collaboration with Adam as well as with his company, Hyperobject Industries.

Previously, Adam worked with Will Ferell for 13 years before they split. While at Sanchez Productions, Adam was focused on political projects while Will concentrated on comedy. With his company, Hyperobject Industries, Adam will not limit himself. The company will be involved in horror, drama, comedy, politically-charged projects, documentaries, and any other engaging productions that will ensure his deal with HBO runs smoothly.

Other productions by Adam McKay

Adam has been said to capitalize on scandals, and the Jeffrey Epstein story is not the first that has brought him some fame. In 2015, “The Big Short” was released with Adam being the director and writer. It was also based on a book, “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine,” that tells the story of the housing bubble in the United States, which resulted in the financial crisis experienced in 2007 and 2008. It did so well that it bagged an Academy Award for being the Best Adapted Screenplay. With such a precedent, it is safe to say that this limited series is in the running for an Oscar.

Adam’s work is ever outstanding, as evidenced by his series “Succession” that also premiered on HBO. In June 2018, not only was it recognized for being the Best International Programme, thus bagged the British Academy Television Award, but it also got five Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Adam also directed “Vice,” which got 8 Academy Awards nominations, and in 2020, you can expect to see “Bad Blood,” another movie based on a Silicon Valley scandal.

Why the story about Jeffery Epstein?

It is fascinating to see how much the story of Jeffrey Epstein is gaining a lot of attention with every media house trying to make a killing through it. Sexual abuse has never been a topic that remained hushed, so when it involves even the White House, then everyone wants to know the truth. Additionally, when the person who would have told the facts dies through an alleged suicide, then the public becomes even more convinced that there is a cover-up.

Jeffrey Epstein was friends with people like Bill Clinton and Donald Trump whose pasts are laden with allegations of sexual misconduct. Therefore the fact he was already registered as a sex offender and still got to abuse so many girls without any prosecution raised eyebrows. Besides, even when he was arrested and charged with human trafficking, the charges were reduced to alleged prostitution.

Conspiracy theorists believe he had valuable information to use against influential people that ensured he stayed away from prison. It is the same reasoning that led people to think he was murdered while in prison to keep him quiet and take the secrets to the grave. We may never the truth, but with the limited series, we will know a bit of what went on in the life of Jeffry Epstein that could have led him to take his own life.
