Protecting humanity lies at the heart of any society that wishes to endure. In the The Wheel of Time universe, the Ajahs play a crucial role in this endeavor. The Prime Video show, based on the eponymous series, follows the journey of Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), a member of the powerful group of women known as the Aes Sedai. These women can harness the One Power and are divided into seven Ajahs, each represented by a color.
While each Ajah has its unique purpose, they all share a common goal: guiding humanity and keeping the Dark One at bay. When a woman becomes an Aes Sedai, she must choose one of the seven known Ajahs based on her purpose and natural aptitude. Although there are seven Aes Sedai groups, rumors of an eighth Ajah persist. From their purposes to their talents, let’s delve into the eight Ajahs in The Wheel of Time universe.
The Blue Ajah
The Wheel of Time’s protagonist, Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine Damodred, is a member of the Blue Ajah. Her character embodies the core values of the Blues—justice and righteousness. The Blue Ajah boasts the largest network of spies, which aids Moiraine in her quest for the Dragon Reborn. While some Aes Sedai seek to eliminate male channelers, Moiraine remains loyal to the Blue Ajah’s cause. She searches for the Dragon, a reincarnation of the male channeler who once brought the world to its knees, in order to defeat the Dark One.
The Red Ajah
Among the eight Ajahs, the Reds shoulder the responsibility of ensuring the proper use of the One Power. Women in this division primarily focus on capturing and gentling male channelers. Although they also hunt female channelers who are not under the White Tower’s control, they are particularly concerned with men. This is mainly because the Dark One tainted their ability to safely wield the One Power during the Age of Legends. Kate Fleetwood‘s Liandrin Guirale is a member of the Red Ajah. Along with other Red sisters, she captures Logain Ablar, the self-proclaimed Dragon Reborn, in “A Place of Safety”, Season 1, Episode 3. Overall, Reds tend to distrust men, which is why they do not bond with Warders.
The Green Ajah
Of all the Ajahs, the Greens are the most prepared for battle. Their primary purpose is to fight when necessary. They often combat the Dark One’s creatures, the Shadowspawn, and are sometimes sent to hunt down dangerous male channelers. However, their ultimate goal is to fight for the Light in the Last Battle. The Green Ajah is also known for its fondness for men, making them the only Ajah to bond with more than one Warder. Alanna Mosvani (Priyanka Bose) is a member of this sect and has two Warders — Maksim (Taylor Napier) and Ihvon (Emmanuel Imani).
The Yellow Ajah
The Yellow Ajah is dedicated to healing. Women who feel drawn to caring for the sick typically join this Aes Sedai group. Yellow sisters are often perceived as arrogant due to their self-assured nature regarding their purpose. Swedish-born actress Evelyn Mok and Vilma Frantová both appeared as Yellow sisters in Season 1 of The Wheel of Time. The latter portrayed the Yellow Aes Sedai Eamon Valda (Abdul Salis) burned in “Shadow’s Waiting”, Season 1, Episode 2.
The Gray Ajah
The Gray Ajah is committed to politics and diplomacy. They are known for brokering peace and mediating between powers to end strife. While the Green Ajah is always ready for war, the Gray is devoted to preventing conflicts and promoting harmony. Gray sisters possess extensive knowledge of history, customs, and laws, which serves as the foundation for their diplomatic skills and often facilitates dispute resolution. No prominent Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah has appeared in the series thus far.
The Brown Ajah
The Brown Ajah is responsible for gathering and preserving knowledge. Members understand that a society can only thrive as much as its knowledge base allows. As such, they are dedicated to the operations of the White Tower Library. Brown sisters are consumed by the pursuit of knowledge and ancient wisdom, often leaving them oblivious to their immediate surroundings and lost in thought. Verin Mathwin is a member of this Ajah, and her character is expected to appear in The Wheel of Time Season 2.
The White Ajah
White Ajah members are known for their logical and philosophical nature. They do not concern themselves with worldly affairs, focusing solely on their search for truth. The White Ajah has the fewest members among the Aes Sedai. They are naturally calm and have no room for anything other than seeking the truth. As a result, their opinions on matters are always devoid of sentiment. Like the Gray Ajah, no prominent member of the White sect has appeared in The Wheel of Time series.
The Black Ajah
As far as The Wheel of Time Ajahs are concerned, the Black Ajah is the least acknowledged. The Black Ajah is believed to be a secret Ajah, with its members also belonging to the seven main Ajahs. However, they are Friends of the Dark and secretly serve the Dark One. Black sisters are not bound by the Aes Sedai Three Oaths; instead, they renounce them for the Black Oaths, which pledge their allegiance to the Great Lord. Season 1 of The Wheel of Time
