Looks like Little Nobody is rejoining the family.
While Vin Diesel was unable to secure Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for his final Fast films, the long-time star was able to recruit Scott Eastwood back into the latest installment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Little Nobody worked alongside Mr. Nobody to track down cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron) in The Fate Of The Furious. Thus far, there’s no word on whether Kurt Russell is in talks to make a return in Fast X. The exact plot details of Fast X haven’t been confirmed, but the roster for the upcoming film has been huge.
Academy Award Winner and Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson is one of the new names for Fast X. Her upcoming role hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. Joining Ms. Larson is Aquaman, or Jason Momoa; The DC actor will trade in his superhero costume and portray the villain in Fast X, with Momoa stating in a recent interview at The Batman premiere that his character is the “bad boy” of the film, “It’s fun; I get to play the bad guy, which I haven’t gotten to do for a while. Now, I get to be the bad boy. A very flamboyant bad boy. A little panache!”
Another familiar face from the superhero world is Alan Ritchson (Titans, Reacher) and Danielle Melchior (The Suicide Squad); like Larson, their roles are unknown but don’t be surprised if the latter ends up being Dom’s 15th cousin or something. These names are a bigger get for the Fast franchise than Eastwood, but it’s cool to see a past face pop up in the series. Vin Diesel confirmed that Fast and the Furious 11 will be the final chapter, though Fast X will be broken up into two parts. Fast veteran Justin Lin will return to helm the final two installments of the main franchise. The series has been going strong since 2001, and with each film, the stunts get wilder and beyond disbelief. Still, the franchise continues to perform extremely well at the box office as the series has made a combined $6.2 billion worldwide.
According to Variety, the franchise is the fifth-biggest series at the global box office, right after Marvel, Harry Potter, James Bond, and Star Wars in terms of box office revenues. It’s crazy to think that the franchise was at a low point with Tokyo Drift, which garnered a disappointing $157.7 million worldwide. However, once Dom, Letty, and Brian rejoined the franchise, then that’s when huge box office returns came for the series. Fast Five made a jaw-dropping $630.1 million worldwide. The number only continued to go higher with every entry following Fast Five, as Fast & Furious 6 grossed a strong 789.3 million worldwide. Furious 7, which had the final performance of Paul Walker, banked an astounding $1.51 billion. Furious 7 remains the highest-grossing film in the franchise thus far. The Fate of the Furious made $1.23 billion. Still an excellent number even though it’s below the previous entry. However, the most recent installment, F9: The Fast Saga, only made $726.2 million. Now, the film came out when the pandemic was still heavily affecting the box office, so it’s likely the cause of the low number; however, still, making over $700 million is no small feat.
While the main franchise is expected to end after 11, that doesn’t mean spinoffs won’t come from the Fast universe. Hobbs & Shaw is expected to get a sequel. Though the spinoff didn’t reach the billion-dollar mark like Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious, it did make $760.3 million worldwide. Dwayne Johnson revealed that news himself to ScreenRant back in 2020. Thus far, there hasn’t been much development on the upcoming project, though one’s thing’s likely sure, Vin Diesel won’t pop up for a cameo for a mini-reunion. Of course, anything is possible, and money rules Hollywood, so it would be foolish to instantly think that Dom and Hobbs wouldn’t share a screen once again.
Whether you love or hate the Fast franchise, there’s no denying the success that the films bring all together. At of the day, the franchise understands that it’s an over-the-top action fest and manages to be wildly entertaining. Should both Fast X and Fast 11 make over $1 billion at the box office, then don’t be surprised if they ultimately pump out more features. As previously stated, Hollywood is a business first and foremost, so films such as Saw, Jason, and Indiana Jones had the last chapter tagline attached, and the series continued to move forward. Fast X is set to be released on May 19, 2023.
