It’s been nearly five years since the last Deadpool movie. Time flies by quickly. The sequel to the successful R-rated pic went with the term: bigger, better, and crazier, and Deadpool II never failed to disappoint in that aspect. However, the true question is, which moments stand out the best in the sequel? There are plenty of moments to choose from, but this list breaks down the five best in Deadpool II.
Vanessa Dies
In truth, Vanessa was a missed opportunity. I understand why David Leitch killed off her character, but there are so many other ways to strip Deadpool of his humanity without getting rid of a character that could’ve been so much more. However, there’s no denying that the scene was effective in getting you invested in the story. The action sequence with Wade and the goons was pretty cool, but the sudden impact of Vanessa dying was gut-wrenching. Deadpool’s self-destructive behavior following her death packed a nice punch while still being over-the-top ridiculous and funny. It highlights what makes Deadpool such a unique superhero. How could not laugh at him blowing himself up? Or even Colossus dragging his mutilated body inside of a bag? Vanessa dying helped spark the entire story and instantly created an “anything can happen” vibe while giving Deadpool 2 some nice emotional weight as well.
Hiring Recruits
The X-Force tease was a clever ruse. There have been various incarnations of the heroes in the comics that include Wolverine and Deadpool; however, the marketing campaign made it seem as if the X-Men universe was expanding once more. Well, before the new squad meets their deadly fate, it was fun getting a glimpse of their personalities in the brief recruitment montage. The standout was Domino and Deadpool’s back-and-forth banter. It was an inventive way of introducing the character that highlighted her fun dynamic with Deadpool. The Vanisher gag was a riot, and having an ordinary Joe named Peter provided a fun moment that saw Dopinder lose his mind over a regular guy getting the X-Force gig. The recruitment scene was just pure fun. It wasn’t a pivotal moment that aided the plot or a cool action sequence, but it continues to highlight the overall charm of Deadpool 2.
The X-Force Is Brutally Killed
The payoff to our new recruits provides the most hilarious scene in the entire film. To see the X-Force meet their grim fates was a perfect combination of absurd, funny, and sad. Bedlam getting hit by a bus, to Shatterstar being sliced-and-diced into mincemeat, and the Vanisher turning out to be Brad Pitt, each death topped the last in entertaining fashion. Of course, we couldn’t forget Peter and his heroism of trying to save Zeitgeist, which provided a sweet and tragic side of this murderous brutality. Is it messed up to get some joy from seeing the X-Force being slaughtered one-by-one? Yep, but Deadpool isn’t shy on the darkly comedic aspects so it’s no surprise that the film would pull such a moment. Despite being a false X-Force, the acknowledgement of the group provides some hope that they will eventually show-up in the Deadpool/X-Men universe someday. There are times when Deadpool gets too meta with its jokes, but this was the perfect balance here.
Domino’s Running Sequence
Domino is easily the best new addition to the Deadpool world. Considering the fact that Cable and Juggernaut were handled pretty well here, that’s a huge feat. Known as Neena Thurman in the comics, we don’t get an in-depth description of who the X-Force character is, but her witty banter with Deadpool and her special luck power do just enough to want more from the superhero. Leitch does an excellent job of taking advantage of the special gift, literally having the world crumbling around the young lady as she speeds down the road in slow-motion. Deadpool’s angry spat over her “imaginary powers” provided some extra fun, but Zazie Beetz brings the character alive with her strong performance.
Wade and Vanessa’s Final Moment
So, Deadpool saves the world, but he dies in the process. He finally meets Vanessa in heaven and it’s a sweet goodbye for America’s favorite couple. The chemistry between Reynolds and Morena Baccarin really helped sell their love, and it also provided some question for a brief period over the future of Deadpool. Even though it became clear quickly that Cable would use his time device to save the merc with the mouth, the moment still provided a nice smile. It was hard to not have a tear in your after Vanessa says, “Kiss me like you miss me Red”. Deadpool may be a silly action/comedy romp, but the film does an excellent job of never forgetting to develop its characters. Vanessa may have gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to the sequel, but it was a fun pairing while it lasted.
