We Had to Share This Real Video of Competitive Pillow Fighting in Japan

Pillow Fighting

This is stuff you could make up but honestly it’s a wonder that anyone would since it wouldn’t be believed until you see it. There is actually a pillow-fighting competition in Japan that took place over the weekend and involved several different teams that were eager to sign up for this event. Imagine a game like dodgeball but instead of round rubber balls, people are flinging pillows at each other with one of their teammates standing at the border as a blocker. That sounds almost like it would be cheating but it seems perfectly within the rules for one person to stand with a blanket so as to provide some cover for their teammates to retrieve any pillows they can and then send them sailing back to the other side in the hopes of hitting someone and getting them out. Funny thing is, it seems as though you can’t even catch the pillow without getting out as one person in the video demonstrates, whereas in dodgeball if you catch the ball the person that threw it is out.

Out of all the sports that we could have found out about this isn’t likely to be seen as one of the strangest, but it’s definitely one that makes you cock your head and go ‘okay…’ as you try to figure out who in the world thought that something usually reserved for slumber parties became something that was an actual organized and competitive sport. Whether or not it’s all that big or bound to get that big is hard to say since every country has their own favorite sports and I’m fairly certain that a lot of countries have events they call sports that others might look at and be mystified by. When it comes to this event though it seems pretty tame but also something that would end rather quickly since being clipped by a pillow seems far easier than it might be when aiming a rubber ball at someone. Watching some of the people in the video however it’s evident that some of them can fling a pillow like no one’s business since a couple of them have a sidearm that’s just flat wicked and can hit someone all the way across the mats.

Apparently this quirky game has been going on since 2013 and was started by a bunch of high school kids, which isn’t too hard to believe but is still rather interesting since sometimes the greatest things in the world start pretty simply. Will this be a great game in the years to come? It’s a little too hard to say yes at the moment, but really it’s fun to watch with a smile since you can almost imagine this sport become something akin to the Dodgeball movie, which was funny as all hell but also something that a lot of people couldn’t see being reality, EVER. But given that it’s one of the least offensive and possibly one of the easiest on the eyes and on the athletes, it could be accurate in saying that this won’t go beyond Ito where it was created. People do like to see sports that offer a little more in the way of conflict and even violence at times, so unless the pillows are going to be upgraded and made a lot harder it’s likely that this will be a pleasing but small event that will attract local competitors and possibly build slowly and not all that much. One thing you’ve got to say about this however is that it is pretty organized and is taken kind of seriously.

Usually when you think of a pillow fight you don’t see people relinquishing their hold on the pillow since it tends to be the kind of thing that you see between those that are playing around. But of course that type of pillow fight can get a lot more violent and can even lead to injury believe it or not since some folks can sling a pillow like a hammer and make even a feather-stuffed sack hurt somehow. But a pillow fight like this actually looks like fun and might be highly enjoyable if a person really gets into it. The way each game starts is even kind of funny since the individuals are seen to be lying down, covered by a blanket, as though the actual use of a pillow means they have to go all in and begin from the sleeping position. It does make me wonder if anyone has ever fallen asleep while waiting for the game to start. Do you think? Anyway, the whole act of having to get up and toss the blanket up seems like it could benefit those that are able to spring out of bed and not get tangled in the blankets. Just imagine if you’re trying to get up and get whacked with a pillow. That’d be kind of funny actually.
