Alison Sudol is an actress as well as both a singer and a songwriter. As a result, some people might recognize her because of her band A Fine Frenzy, while other people might recognize her because of her role in one of the productions that she has been in. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Alison Sudol:
1. Born in Seattle, WA
Sudol was born in Seattle, WA to a pair of drama teachers. However, she spent little time in said city because when her parents divorced when she was still at the age of five, the three of them moved to Los Angeles, CA. As a result, while a lot of would-be actors and actresses move to the City of Angels for the sake of their career, Sudol was already there when she became interested in that sort of thing.
2. Grew Up Listening to a Wide Range of Music
When she was still a child, Sudol listened to a wide range of music. Some examples ranged from Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald to the jazz music called swing that reached the height of its popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. With that said, it is clear that some of the music that Sudol listened to had a bigger influence than others, seeing as how she has mentioned a number of musicians as sources of inspiration. One would be Bob Dylan, while another would be Johnny Cash.
3. Fond of Literature
Sudol has described herself as being “nerdy and quiet” when she was still in school. As a result, it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that she has a fondness for literature. Some of the authors that she has mentioned include C.S. Lewis, E.B. White, and Lewis Carroll. Lewis was the one who wrote The Chronicles of Narnia; E.B. White was the one who wrote Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web, though it is interesting to note that he was the co-author of The Elements of Style as well; Carroll was the one who wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
4. Her Band Name Is a Reference to Shakespeare
Speaking of which, Sudol’s band name A Fine Frenzy is taken from a line from Shakespeare. To be exact, it comes from Act 5 of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was the play that consisted of four plots connected by the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. For those who are unfamiliar with those names, Theseus and Hippolyta are famous characters from Greek mythology, though for various reasons, the setting of A Midsummer Night’s Dream bears little resemblance to mythological Greece. As for the line, it refers to the emotions of someone who is caught up in a fit of inspiration.
5. Her Fondness of Literature Influences Her Music
Naturally, Sudol’s fondness of literature influences her music. In particular, it is worth noting that Sudol is very interested in songwriting as storytelling. Furthermore, she seems to see wording as being even more important in songwriting than in standard writing, not least because songs have much harsher word limits. As such, there is an increased sense that every word matters because there are fewer of them with which to tell a full-sized story.
6. Interested in Writing
On a related note, Sudol’s interest in writing extends beyond her songwriting. This can be seen in how she has stated that she is writing a book for children that will be called Three Sails and the Family Moss. For those who are curious, the book will be an adventure book that will follow in the footsteps of The Chronicles of Narnia, which should be more than enough to provide interested individuals with an idea of what to expect from it.
7. Involved with International Union for Conservation of Nature
Sudol is one of the goodwill ambassadors for the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, which can be shortened to either the International Union for Conservation of Nature or the IUCN. As its name states, the international organization is interested in conserving nature as well as practicing the sustainable use of natural resources. For the purpose of promoting these two aims, it is engaged in a wide range of activities such as gathering data, analyzing data, advocating various policies to the relevant stakeholders, and seeking to educate relevant stakeholders.
8. Involved with Greenpeace
For that matter, Sudol is involved with Greenpeace, which tends to be much better-known than the IUCN. In part, this is because Greenpeace is a very memorable name, which helps it to stay in the minds of those who hear it. However, the more important reason is that Greenpeace has been involved in a number of very public and very prominent actions over the course of its existence. Sometimes, these actions have been laudable. Other times, well, suffice to say that a group of Greenpeace activists did permanent damage to Peru’s Nazca Lines by failing to follow protective protocols while pulling a PR stunt, which was particularly bad for its reputation because the whole incident was captured on camera.
9. She Isn’t the Sole Member of Her Family Interested in the Environment
Sudol isn’t the sole member of her family with an interest in protecting the environment. This can be seen in how her mother as well as her grandparents were involved in an effort to block the construction of a strip mine and an asphalt plant at a place called Newman Ridge. With that said, said conflict was a very personal matter for said individuals, seeing as how Sudol’s grandparents’ home was situated close enough to the proposed sites that they would have been greatly affected by the negative externalities thereof.
10. In the Fantastic Beasts Movies
Over time, Sudol has been showing up more and more in acting roles. One excellent example would be her role in the Fantastic Beasts movies, which are prequels to the Harry Potter series that preceded them. In those, Sudol plays the role of Queenie Goldstein, who is the younger sister of the former Auror Tina Goldstein.
