In what feels like just a few hours ago, three teams arrived in Detroit to partake in the finale of season 31 of The Amazing Race. Season 31 has been a season full of incredible obstacles and amazing stories. We saw many teams try, but only one prevailed in the end. By the time the show got back Stateside, only the toughest remained: Colin and Christie, the Afghanimals, and Tyler and Korey. In the end, super couple Colin and Christie won the race out of all the groups and duos that tried. It was a redeeming moment for the couple considering how they acted on the show back in season 5. The couple attributed their success ultimately to how much they matured over the years. People do change after all.
The Amazing Race has been pitting people against each other since 2001. It has made for some excellent television programming over the years, and that’s readily evident to the number of seasons the show has had. After 31 seasons, the show still gets a steady viewership. It’s probably attributable to the creativity in the show itself. The show transforms every single season, so that no two seasons have been alike. With the finale finally over, we’re sure that preparations are already under way for the next season.
For a couple of years, the show resorted to only filming and showing one season of the show every year. However, The Amazing Race show host Phil Keoghan suggested recently that the show might go back to producing two seasons of the show every year. That discussion is coming to reality this year, as we’re going to get another season of the race.
As a matter of fact, filming for season 32 started in November of 2018. Filming actually took place on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. According to this article, it’s actually the first time that The Amazing Race was ever filmed in the Caribbean Islands. That’s a huge opportunity and a giant tourism boost for the islands. It’s estimated that the show will have roughly 80 million viewers by the time it’s shown on TV.
Season 32 started off with 11 teams. By the time the first leg of the competition was over, they were down to 10. In the islands, the teams had to participate in pretty amazing challenges. The teams got the chance to fish at Nylon Pool. They played music at Pigeon Point, and they even got the opportunity to participate in a goat race at the Buccoo Integrated Facility. While it may all sound like a good time, we have to remember that the teams were all still racing at that point.
We also know that casting for the show was much like any of the other seasons. The teams had to be in twos, and both members of a team had to know each other already. The preference is that both team members have to be somehow relatable to each other (they should get along), and they should also have known each other for a minimum of two years. While some people may not think this is an important detail, familiarity brings an advantage for many challenges in the show. With $1 million dollars on the line, teams would want to get every advantage they can.
One other thing we know is that the final leg of season 32 was filmed in New Orleans. There are plenty of interesting places in New Orleans to serve as challenge locations. We’re also fairly sure that the French Quarter will be featured somehow. According to this article from Ibtimes.com, this season was actually unscheduled. That means it wasn’t scheduled to be shown on TV this year at all. Considering that season 31 just ended, CBS announced that we will not see season 32 until midseason 2020. This will be an adjustment period for CBS and for The Amazing Race while production goes back to filming two seasons every year. We’ll probably hear about season 33 filming soon, and that should get the show back on track.
Not much else is known about season 32. The identities of the team have been kept secret except for one team. This past season 31, we saw one of our favorite teams–Tyler and Korey–make it all the way to the finale only to lose it to another favorite team. Tyler and Korey are YouTubers, and it seems that two of their fellow YouTube stars made it to season 32 of The Amazing Race. The Backpacking Boyfriends, Will Jardel and James Wallington, make up one team out of the 11. If you want to get to know this team before the season 32 airing, you could go to their YouTube page to predict how they might stack up.
For now, we’re going to get a long break before we see The Amazing Race onscreen again. Since season 32 is basically done filming, there’s still a chance we might see the season earlier than 2020. If any of the fall shows don’t quite make the cut, CBS will always have The Amazing Race to replace any programming. We’ve seen this happen several times before. The Amazing Race has actually replaced low-rated shows such as Training Day and Million Dollar Mile. The show has also been used in the past to bridge the gap between other shows such as Survivor. It might be inconvenient for fans to have to flip flop like this, but The Amazing Race is such a great show that it doesn’t really matter when it airs–people come to watch it.
In the meantime, we could use this time to catch up on previous seasons. If you’re brave enough, you might even want to keep an eye out for announcements about season 33’s filming. If there were one thing better than watching The Amazing Race, it would be running it.
