Why the “New” Chucky is WAY More Dangerous

Let’s put it this way, the old Chucky was able to get around pretty well and do a lot of stuff and mess people up left and right. But the new Chucky is being brought into an era when almost everything is automated and hooked up to a network. Brad Dourif’s Chucky might have looked at this new era and laughed, right up until the new Chucky tore him apart with a radio-controlled drone or smashed him to pieces with a smart car. THAT’S why this new Chucky is so dangerous, he’s not bound by much of anything when it comes to killing, apart from his limited physical reach. A killer that can control smart devices is one that has a lot more leeway in the current world and can be immeasurably dangerous since he can do a great deal of damage to more than just one person at a time if he so chooses.

In fact the only real limitation as Aja Romano from Vox has stated, and I kind of agree, is that this cuts down on the mystical aspect of Chucky, who is now known as Buddi. Recall from the first and original story that Chucky was a doll that had been possessed by a living spirit, therefore making him that much creepier and less apt to be more like a miniature Terminator bent on causing random havoc. The old-school Chucky simply couldn’t be killed since the spirit wasn’t willing to move on, so each time his body was replaced he was able to come back again, and again, and again. That made the original Chucky undeniably scary at first, until it got overdone and therefore kind of cheesy. This new Chucky however, he seems like the type that could be a bit of programming gone wrong, which could lead to much bigger ramifications.

As Chris E. Hayner from Gamespot has so accurately put it, Chucky is now the murderous version of Alexa. Think about it, he can control any smart-device that’s made by his company, and as we’ve seen in this era so far if a company makes one smart device they’re going to keep pushing forward and make more, and more and more until they’ve covered just about every base they can. This means that Chucky can control everything from a person’s phone to their car since people have become absolutely bonded to their smart devices in ways that might never have been imagined in the past. You could say that this reboot is taking the fear that some people have of smart devices taking over the world and ramping it up to 11 in the hopes that will get them thinking twice when they go to play on their phone or start their car or even turn on the TV. It’s a lot of paranoia to think that our devices might turn on us, but it does get people thinking, and some might even think that going back to a world of simplicity might be best. It probably won’t happen but they’ll still think about it.

Even better than this though, and this is what gave the original Chucky a huge edge when it came to his character, is the voice that’s going to be used for this new murderous creation. Mark Hamill has shown throughout the years that he can produce one of the creepiest voices of all when he does the Joker, and the fact that he was enlisted to voice the part of Buddi/Chucky is nothing short of great since it gives the doll a serious and very creepy edge that augments the already terrifying notion that it’s alive. Whether Chucky is a computer program gone wrong or a sentient spirit that has attached to the doll however is something that still begs the question of why this dynamic would ever be messed with since it was one of the driving reason why the original was considered to be so great after a while.

The main point of course is that Chucky now is going to be way more dangerous considering the abilities he’s been given and the tech that he has to work with now. The idea that a horror villain can access different methods to kill with is nothing new, but making use of smart technology is something that seems as though it will be even more frightening since people are relying more and more upon the current technology of the era and as a result are woefully unprepared, at least in horror movies, for that technology to be used against them. So basically anything that the parent company makes, Chucky can control, which makes him immeasurably more dangerous than his earlier counterpart. This is going to be one wild ride when the movie finally hits theaters, though something seems to indicate that it’s going to need to walk a fine line or risk being a little too over the top.
