Gossip Girl 4.10 “Gaslit” Review

Gossip Girl 4.10 “Gaslit” ReviewSo this week’s Gossip Girl took out two of the Witches of Bushwick by sending Vanessa packing and (seemingly) banishing Jenny from the Upper East Side forever, but Juliet, the true culprit, managed to slip away unscathed. For now.

While there were some ‘issues’ with the episode (which will be revealed later), this GG outing turned out to be the best episode since the Paris arc at the beginning of the season. Hands down. One of the greatest moments of the night came when Lily and Dan had their confrontation over Serena. Both parties were right in their positions, but it was Lily who got the realization that she needed a new way of handling her kids’ problems instead of locking them away in a rehab clinic. However, this seemed like an about face on Lily’s character, because she’s always been there for Serena through the good and the bad in recent years. In my personal opinion, Serena needs to do the same reflection about herself instead of blaming the world for her problems, which is why I was okay with Jenny’s plan until Juliet went mad. Speaking of which…

Ben being horrified of the monster he created in his sister came pretty left field. The tables have turned and Juliet’s anger at her brother pretty justified, because he pushed her to that brink. The sad thing about all of this is that after Ben’s about face last night, we still kind of don’t know exactly ‘what’ the plan to take down Serena entailed. In other words, how far were they to go in this plan? What was the endgame? With those questions in the air, it’s kind of hard for Ben to even want to balk at Juliet’s actions, given that the outcome of their game wouldn’t have been pretty either way.

The end result of the Juliet arc bothered me a bit, because in the grand scheme of things it seems as if the entire story line was a ruse to get rid of both Jenny and Vanessa, two of the most hated characters in the Gossip Girl lineup. Despite this being a damnGossip Girl 4.10 “Gaslit” Review good episode, the blatant discarding of those two characters can’t be ignored, because there is little each girl can do to get a ‘Get Out Of Jail’ card from their peers at this point. Jenny might’ve saved her own behind, but her own father didn’t want to believe her, making it clear to Jenny that she pretty much didn’t have any allies left in the Upper East Side. Now if Jenny could just say she left on her own accord instead of playing up Blair’s ‘banishment’ craziness…

As much as I consider myself Vanessa Abram’s sole cheerleader, even I can’t speak up for her throwing Jenny under the bus the way she did. A huge part of me is thinking that the writers are catering to the fans’ hatred of Vanessa by making her more and more unlikable. The problem with this is that Vanessa is the only person left who hasn’t conformed over to the ‘dark side” aka the glamorous life of the Upper East Side. Even Rufus has went bottom up in the lifestyle he kind of loathed at first. With Vanessa gone, Dan and Rufus will slowly fall into the abyss of hypocrisy.

The whole Chair arc was very mature and adult, something we’ve been asking for all season. Chuck’s explanation in the limo of who he really came to stand beside was one of the best scenes of the night. Ed Westwick did it again and sent Chuck Bass onto a whole new level of coolness which couldn’t go unnoticed. Hopefully, the two will reconcile on a more permanent basis, because the make up to break up game is getting old.

The story line featuring Nate’s parents seemed like it was put into motion only to distract Nate from the Save Serena event so Dan wouldn’t have any competition/conflict when Serena revealed her true feelings to Dan. With that said, expect another fight between the two besties in the future.

Dan and Serena? Disgusting. That is all I have to say on that note.
