The Continued Success Of ABBA Decades Later

If you grew up in the 70s or 80s there is no doubt that you heard about the band ABBA. In fact, most of today’s generation is still cranking out some of their old hits. The Stockholm band was formed in 1972 and got its name by combining the first let of each member’s name. The band consists of Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaseus, Benny Answerson, and Anno-FridLyngstad. Although they are a Swedish formed band they made quite an impact in many English-speaking countries. On many occasions, ABBA has been referred to as one of the most popular pop bands of all time, but this was a long time ago. Well, you might be surprised to learn that the popularity of the band is still intact and growing strong. How is this possible?

Their Songs Became Anthems

When it comes right down to it one of the biggest reasons for the band’s continued success are their songs. When they created a hit song it wasn’t just a hit song. It became somewhat of an anthem for individuals all around the world. Just look at the song “Mamma Mia”. This song is without a doubt catchy, but it has been extremely influential and copied over the years. There is probably a good chance that you have heard the song even if you didn’t know ABBA were the masterminds behind the hit. And, this was just one of their major hits. They literally have hundreds more.

Vocal And Expressional Skills

If you check out the infographic from Betway Insider (below) you will see that it was the two female singers that held the reigns when it came to vocals. Of course, the other two male members did take lead in some songs, but the majority of the singing was left up to the women. And they really knew what they were doing. They knew how to bring out every bit of emotion in their hearts and pour it directly into the words. Just go back and watch some of their videos and you will tell by their expressions that they are really giving the words everything they got. The fact that the two ladies could harmonize like it was nobody’s business didn’t hurt either.

Impressive stuff!

The Continued Success Of ABBA Decades Later

Emotionally Lyrical

It is hard to deny that ABBA weren’t really lyrical geniuses. Most of their lyrics were comprised of very simple English words, but it was the way that the two ladies carried the lyrics that really impressed. You don’t need to be a lyrical genius when you can carry your lyrics over as smoothly and emotionally as the band did. There was a period in the 80s when things got a bit darker after the divorce of two of the members, but everything was always smooth and emotional.

TV And Entertainment Acclaim

It might be true that the entertainment and TV industry didn’t hold as much sway in the 70s and 80s as it does now, but ABBA has been one of those bands that were always highly acclaimed on TV and in the media. In fact, there was a smash hit stage musical that was specifically created around the song “Mamma Mia”. The musical still gets a lot of recognition today. There was eventually a feature length movie created starring some of Hollywood’s biggest hitters.
