To Make or Not To Make: A Solo Yoda Star Wars Movie

Does anyone realize that we haven’t seen Yoda in a Star Wars movie since 2005, barring his return in The Last Jedi? That’s a long time to go without seeing one of the most famous Jedi Masters on screen. Yet some people are still wondering if Yoda getting his own movie is going to be worth the effort or not for several reasons. There’s not a whole lot that’s known about Yoda save for his exploits and the few things that have been seen in the comics concerning his past. He was alive for the better part of a thousand years and during that time there’s no telling just how many Jedi he trained and how many Sith he might have sensed or helped to put down. If you look at the Star Wars histories then you might see that the Legends canon would have to make up the difference of Yoda’s past if they really wanted to save any kind of continuity and keep the fans appeased. Of course both points don’t seem to be high on the list for Disney unfortunately.

There are a few reasons why fans might and might not be psyched about a movie featuring Yoda.

It would have to be CGI.

For a film that would be all about the diminutive Jedi Master there would be too much movement and positioning required from a puppet as was used in the original trilogy. Even Frank Oz has stated that it would be too much and he’s the guy that made it possible in the beginning. Some folks seem to think that the CGI used in the prequels wasn’t quite good enough but it’s easy to argue that a figure like Yoda is someone that’s bent and wizened with age but is also able to call upon the Force and make himself appear much more hearty as he leaps into the fray. His fight with Palpatine was proof that Yoda can get down and do some serious damage, and despite having to run rather than be destroyed he was holding his own for a while. He made Count Dooku look like a novice and as for Palpatine it would have been interesting to see what might have happened if they were in a different setting. But for all that, CGI is the only way to go right now, as this is asking too much of a puppet or its handler.

There’s no telling Frank Oz would voice the character again.

It’s not for certain if he is or isn’t since the movie is rumored to be in development but otherwise is being kept very hush-hush. It would seem that he really needs to come back since he originated Yoda’s voice and is really one of the only guys in the world that can do it correctly. Plus the iconic voice of the Jedi Master is something that people will no doubt be expecting if and when this movie ever comes to light. There are just some roles that can’t be duplicated with all that much success and until someone is found that can take over for Oz this role needs to be given to him as much as possible. It’s one thing if the prequels didn’t live up to a lot of peoples’ expectations, it’s another if the Last Jedi is going to be seen as the worst film in the bunch. But Yoda’s voice really needs to be on point for a lot of people since it’s memorable enough that changing it in any way might cause a lot of people to turn away from the franchise once again.

A lot of people would love to see an origin film.

Think about this: we don’t know that much about Yoda. There are stories and there are comics that tell us a little more than the movies do, but for the most part his life has been shrouded in secrecy for a long, long time. There’s no telling just what he’s seen, what he’s done, or how many Jedi he’s seen come and go. He’s been training those in the order for so long that it’s likely that he’s seen people come, go, and fall so often that he learned how to shut it out and move forward by developing the philosophies that he teaches to younglings in the prequels. To understand how Yoda came to be who he is today would be extremely interesting and shed a light on many answers that have been asked throughout the history of Star Wars.

There are rumors going around that this and a few other films are in development when it comes to Star Wars, but as of now it’s all being kept very quiet and on the down low. The kind of leaks that could ruin a movie such as this are being watched very carefully since quite honestly this would be a worthwhile film.
