Jason Beghe is the kind of guy you might not want to cross when he’s in character, or even on the street outside of the studio for that matter. The guy’s voice could scare the living daylights out of a lot of people simply by the way it sounds, though in truth he might be kind of a nice guy. That all depends on what day you catch him on, just as it would with anyone. In terms of his acting and his career he’s been an up and down kind of character that has his good times and his bad. To many he’s the kind of person that exemplifies the tough guy role since he has the look, the voice, and the demeanor that seems to indicate that he’s very good at what he does and revels in it. This is usually the way someone gets typecast but in some cases that might be a good thing since it could be a niche that some people really want to stick to.
Here are a few things you might not know about him.
10. He’s good friends with David Duchovny.
He and David pretty much grew up together and Jason was the best man at David’s marriage to Tea Leoni. They’ve been around one another for a long time and while there have been moments when the friendship is strained they’ve still been there for each other.
9. He played the same character on five different TV series.
Sgt. Voight has made his way across five different TV shows, and to be honest that’s impressive since very rarely does anyone get to crossover in this manner and still keep their character intact. It hasn’t happened to the degree that he’s a regular on all of these shows but it is still interesting that he was kept as the same character.
8. His gravelly voice is due to a car accident.
The damage was extensive enough that he had to be intubated, which is the act of sticking a tube into the trachea for ventilation. The problem was that he kept pulling the tube out and the result was a voice that sounds like he’s been gargling with rocks.
7. He was investigated for sexual harassment.
He’s just one of many that this has happened to but he was accused by a few cast members of speaking and acting inappropriately, for which he’s since apologized and managed to rectify as he’s taken courses on how to act around others.
6. He’s a former Scientologist.
He was all about Scientology for a while until he found out that it just wasn’t for him and was easily likened to a cult. When he left he started speaking out against the organization and actually protesting it at times.
5. He started acting in the mid-80s.
Jason has been around for quite some time and in all honesty has been seen here and there throughout several shows and movies that have made good use of him for a few minutes before he’s faded into the background. The point of course is that aside from the roles he’s had that are very prominent he’s kind of served more as a supportive and secondary figure in a lot of different projects.
4. He went to prep school as a young man.
Some people argue that this is a better way to prepare kids for an education and a bright future since it’s not quite as loose or as unstable as public school but there are still arguments that it’s too closed off and doesn’t allow for the real world experience that one will have to deal with. Both arguments have valid points, so it typically comes down to personal choice.
3. He was a model in Europe for a while.
It’s kind of hard to see Jason as being a model to be honest but then again in his current state and age one would have to look at past photos and determine if he was really the kind of person you could see standing around modeling this or that. Obviously he was worth the time and effort that he took to get the job.
2. He convinced David Duchovny to become an actor.
Duchovny was apparently planning to become a professor later on and instead Jason managed to convince him to audition for commercials and the rest as they say is history. So we should be thanking him probably for Fox Muldur and every other Duchovny character that’s come along.
1. He was termed as a whistle-blower when he left Scientology.
He became so vocal about the pitfalls of Scientology that many called him a whistle-blower and he was highly criticized for the fact. But it seems that if people are going to call others such names that it kind of indicates a problem with the religion itself. Why would they care if someone talked about them unless they knew deep down that their religion had obvious flaws?
All in all Jason is a pretty talented actor that has a rather interesting life off camera.
