It’s been seen throughout the history of Hollywood that celebrity couples can look great together, but sometimes when they part ways they let loose with a few parting shots that allow things to get ugly very quickly. They tend to have the money, the influence, and often the chutzpah to really make things get downright nasty when they want. It seems fair to say that non-celebrities can get just as nasty, but without airing their differences out on TV it’s easy to see how the average person would go largely unnoticed by all but those that are most directly connected to them. Celebrities on the other hand are notoriously public with a lot of the things they do and are able to knock one another about in the media with just a few words spoken in the right ears. Taking a look at how many men and women have been raked over the coals of public opinion and laid bare in the media it seems fair to say that celebrities know very well how to ruin one another when it comes to a divorce that’s anything but amicable.
Here are just a few of the ugliest celebrity divorces that took place within the last decade.
5. Tiger Woods and Ellen Nordegren
That Tiger still has any fans at all after being exposed as a serial cheater by his wife is proof that a lot of people are willing to forgive just about anything when it comes to loving their favorite athlete, but Ellen Nordegren wasn’t quite this forgiving when she confronted him about it in the beginning. For her the humiliation was worth around $100 million of his money, but it also involved a bit of physical retribution on her part. In 2009 she chipped his tooth by throwing a cell phone at him and then went after his Escalade with a golf club. You could say that she didn’t handle it too well right off, but things eventually calmed down.
4. Usher and Tameka Foster
These two just didn’t seem compatible from the start since he acted like he was still single and she had severe hangups about being married to a famous celebrity. Eventually that all came to a head in 2009 when they finally called it quits after two years of marriage. When one of their sons almost drowned in Usher’s pool however she went to court again with him in 2012 for custody. Unfortunately she lost. It would seem that Usher had the real power on his side in this matter since she didn’t seem to stand a chance and, even more unfortunately, she was kind of blindsided by her own insecurities.
3. Kelsey and Camille Grammer
Cheating seems to be a big problem in Hollywood, perhaps because of the elite status and the lengths that people are willing to go for celebrities. But whatever the case Kelsey was accused of cheating on his wife, which he did, and the divorce was underway not too long after. Unfortunately it took about two years to finalize since there was a huge issue over who would get what. Anyone thinking that celebrities have it easy because they have money and all the toys they could want obviously need to pay attention to celebrity divorces since once the stuff hits the fan it’s bound to get ugly and money only tends to complicate things.
2. Terrence Howard and Michelle Ghent
If you thought Terrence Howard’s spat with Robert Downey Jr. was bad then you need to get a load of what went on between him and his wife during their marriage. Things seemed to have gotten quite physical and even more than a little personal during their time together as Terrence claimed that she would spit racial epithets at him and threaten to have him killed by her “Russian friends”, while she would claim that he physically abused her during a fight they’d had while on vacation. Things just got uglier from there, but in the divorce proceedings he wound up walking away with most of the property while being ordered to pay alimony for three years.
1. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Ah yes, the split of the decade it would seem. Brad Pitt even being seen with Angelina Jolie in the first place was, back in the day, something of a scandal. But then they became one of the cutest couples in Hollywood, not to mention a power couple that people looked up to. Technically these two are still married since in the past two years they haven’t decided on how to finalize anything such as custody or child-support. Right now things are bogged down as much as they can be and despite the continuing slow burn of their descent into the single life once again they have yet to really find a way to part on any kind of terms that won’t result in a lot of nastiness down the line.
Celebrities get divorced just like anyone else, but they do it in a way that makes the world pay attention for some reason.
