If you couldn’t guess by the picture or the name Texas Frightmare Weekend is an event that’s held in Dallas, Texas and is all about horror-inspired movies, shows, stories, and anything else that people can cram into the convention. It’s been a hit every year and guests to the convention have included actors, directors, and producers that have something to do with everything from classic to upcoming horror films. Think of it as a Comic-Con for the horror buffs that can’t help but admire the gore, terror, and screams of their favored genre. Instead of various comic book characters and fantasy figures you’re more likely to run into fans dressed in some of the most terrifying outfits you can imagine, stuff that will give you nightmares and in cases might provoke a few personal fantasies. In any case, it looks like a blast and is something that any fan of horror would likely be happy to attend.
The first event was held in 2006.
This event was held in Grapevine, Texas but it was still considered a hit since it sparked off what would become a fan favorite convention for the next decade and more. If you’ve ever wondered just how many people are involved in the horror genre when it comes to movies making your way to Frightmare Weekend would be the best way to find out. Comic Con might give you some idea of how much people love their horror but this event is highly specialized and is geared towards horror in a way that nothing else is. The event seems to have bounced back and forth between Grapevine and Dallas but thankfully fans don’t much care so long as it continues to be held each year.
There have been some truly famous people that have attended this convention.
When you think of conventions you can’t help but thinking about who might be showing up to give the fans a little bit of a thrill and to show them that they are appreciated. Greats like George Romero, Danny Trejo, Lance Henriksen, and many more have attended this weekend and have made it a moment to remember for many upon many fans. You’ve got to remember that those who have stepped fully into the horror genre know by now that without the fans they wouldn’t have what they have now. While the movies and the roles they’ve taken on have been great and in some cases legendary it still falls to the fans to actually like what they do and make sure that the film legends that have been created get remembered. If not for that then the horror genre would be pointless, in fact anything to do with entertainment would be pointless if the fans no longer cared to watch and pick their favorites. So showing up to these events is a choice obviously, but it’s a wise choice by those that make the trip.
Often times it costs a good deal of money to get a picture and an autograph, but so many people are willing to pay that the price seems to be negligible for the most part. After all this is the chance to get your picture taken with someone that has been a part of the horror genre for a while, whoever it is. Imagine how much of an honor it would be to get your picture taken with a legend like George Romero. Obviously that won’t be possible any longer since Mr. Romero passed away in 2017, but those that got to meet the man no doubt consider themselves lucky, and for good reason.
Horror is the name of the game.
Anything that scares, anything that terrifies, and anything that’s simply too horrifying for words goes during this weekend. Obviously the convention is geared to be fun and allow the fans to interact with one another and their favorite stars and characters, but unlike other conventions you’ll see mostly horror-based characters roaming the space in which the convention is held. You might see some variety, after all it’s the choice of the fans what character they come as, if they dress up at all, but typically anything you see is going to be rooted deeply in some type of horror film, story, or even video game depending on what the individual chooses. Obviously a lot of the same rules go for this convention as for others, meaning you can’t carry in anything that could classify as a serious weapon, costumes have to cover so much of your body (sorry, no Angry Princess from 13 Ghosts), and of course you have to be on good behavior at all times. Sorry Texas Chainsaw fans, no skinning of faces and no chainsaws through the abdomen, or back, or anywhere else.
All in all this looks like a very fun convention and one that many a horror buff would find inviting.
