If you looked at her for just a short amount of time you might think that she’s little more than just an attractive woman, but Candis Cayne has a little more to her than that. Some people might not agree with the whole transgender idea but the great thing is that they don’t have to. Their opinion usually means less than nothing to the people that identify as women in men’s bodies and vice versa. The sad part is that a lot of people are still afraid to come out and be who they want to be and act in a way that feels right for them. Living in a world where a lot of religions condemn this kind of behavior or at least attempt to ostracize it in their own ways it’s not hard to think that people such as Candis might be a little uneasy in certain crowds. But she’s found her community and her fan base throughout her career and she’s been working it as much as possible to her benefit and to increase awareness of what the LGBTQ community has been going through for a very long time.
The struggle is still very real, but there are a lot of people that are willing to fight back and educate those around them so as to protect themselves and their community and help people to understand that this way of life isn’t harming anyone, but is helping to enlighten those that are living it.
10. She’s a transgender actress.
Like I mentioned you might think at a glance that she’s beautiful, and she is, but you might not think she’s anything but a woman. Closer inspection would show that she still does carry a few male qualities about her, but thankfully for everyone that’s no one else’s business unless she decides it is. The transition she underwent is rather impressive since there aren’t a whole lot of obvious signs that she was once seen as a man.
9. She made a name for herself at popular gay bar in New York.
Candis has been dancing for a while now and has made a big name for herself by frequenting a place known as the Boy Bar. She’s been big into choreography and has been practicing her moves for some time and has even gained a following because of it. Obviously she’s just that good that people want to come out and appreciate how she moves on the stage. Some dancers go their whole lifetime without gaining such a reputation.
8. She has her own show.
You might think it’s only natural that someone like Candis would have her own show to voice her own thoughts and beliefs and provide a forum for like-minded people and you might be right. She’s certainly not the first to do it and probably won’t be the last. But the great thing about it is that it does give a voice to those that feel marginalized and even threatened in a straight society.
7. She’s the first transgender actress to have a recurring role on a TV show.
The show was Sexy Dirty Money and she starred alongside William Baldwin, playing the woman he was having an affair with, Carmalita Rainer. A lot of people might have had a problem with this but if it was given that much attention it was quelled quickly. The show never really took off and was eventually cancelled.
6. She was born Brendan McDaniel.
She has a fraternal twin named Dylan, and their parents were both teachers. Aside from that there’s not a lot of other really personal information aside from that fact that she was born in Maui and left to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer.
5. She was performing in drag in the 90’s.
Candis knew early on that she wanted to be a woman and would go dancing in drag to show who she really was and what she could do. Even in the 90’s though the idea of transgender females wasn’t such a widely accepted thing yet, so it had to be kind of difficult for her.
4. She’s made appearances on the show I am Cait.
Some people might cringe when they think of Caitlyn Jenner and there are a lot of reasons to do so, but they won’t be listed here. This appearance on the show however is more out of solidarity and support than anything.
3. She was in the To Wong Foo movie.
She had a small appearance in the movie and even managed to direct the choreography. The film wasn’t much of a hit but it did feature a lot of interesting visuals if you ever watched it.
2. She has a fairly extensive resume.
She’s done a fair amount in her time and seems as though she found a niche that she could fill in Hollywood. That’s inspiring in a way since the general attitude about transgender still seems kind of mixed in certain areas.
1. She doesn’t want to be seen as a spokeswoman for the LGBTQ community.
Candis definitely supports the LGBTQ community but she doesn’t want to be seen as their spokeswoman. She simply wants to be seen as a happy human being that’s content with her life.
That sounds very reasonable.
