Ecto Cooler was like getting a big taste of ectoplasmic goo in a can, but it wasn’t destined to stick around it seems. The only real reason that Hi-C’s Ecto Cooler was ever taken off the shelves was because it was promotional gimmick for the Ghostbusters movie. While a lot of people didn’t care for the new reboot that pitted four women against a new legion of ghosts they did manage to work up the enthusiasm for their favorite green drink when it hit the shelves again, at least for a little while. That has to be said because eventually the demand for Ecto Cooler died down and the stuff stopped selling. People wanted it to begin with but grew disenchanted with it rather quickly.
You might want to blame the movie but not only would that be too easy, it’d be slamming the original movie in a way since that’s where the idea came from after all. But really and truly the fact that it’s gone away is still saddening to a lot of fans. Unfortunately that proves how fickle the fans are since they wanted it when it wasn’t there and they barely bought it once it was back on the shelves. As far as nostalgia goes people might buy it since they remember the drink from their childhood. Many major companies are certainly playing upon the nostalgia felt by so many that grew up two or three decades ago and it’s become a trend. Whether it’s reboots, releasing the same drink years later, or anything that has to do with the past people tend to eat that stuff up. When it comes to Ghostbusters however there are a great many things more popular than Ecto Cooler that could be brought back, though somehow the drink has become one of the top most desired things to give back to the public.
It’s not bad really, but the things that tasted so great in your childhood kind of lose just a little bit of their luster when you taste them as adults, especially considering that your taste buds have changed just enough that the experience isn’t what you thought it was going to be. Anyone ever have that happen? The moment you find something from your childhood you expect it to be just like it was when you were a kid. You get excited at the prospect of finally having something in your grasp that you haven’t seen for years. You pop the top, pour it into a glass, or just drink it, and then…..it’s about as ordinary as can be aside from the color. That’s the joy of childhood being squashed by adulthood much in the same way that Coca-Cola sees fit to do by not bringing Ecto Cooler back for seasonal purposes. Even bringing it back for Halloween would make it worth the cost, as many stores would be able to stock up and possibly sell out.
Sometimes it seems that all the things we grew up with keep flickering in and out like a TV station with bad reception.
