When you look at how the Infinity War could have shaped up had Disney owned the rights to every last Marvel character in time you’d realize that there are simply too many of them to really pack into one movie. Even as it is this movie will have to be done in two installments since Avengers 4 will be the culmination of Infinity War. No spoilers, just a really good hunch. But moving on, for all those comic buffs that remember how The Infinity Gauntlet went down, Thanos did in fact retrieve all of the Infinity Stones but not in the same manner that was used in the MCU version. Instead he had Mephisto at his side as a kind of lackey for a while and was doing it all to impress Death so that she would show him her affections.
But of course we know how that goes since Death has rebuffed him time and time again. No matter what he does and no matter how many people he kills in so many different ways Thanos never really gets Death attention. But in the comics, the original Infinity Gauntlet, the battle was a lot different. Here goes:
Adam Warlock was front and present for much of the strategic plans of the battle but didn’t step in until later.
The Silver Surfer was a vital part of the battle but blew it when Thanos just barely saw him coming before backhanding Captain America and breaking his neck.
Vision didn’t die before the battle and actually got a good hit on Thanos, but it did nothing. He would eventually have his innards ripped out by Thanos.
Iron Man and Spider-Man were taken out by Terraxia, a companion that Thanos created when Lady Death ignored him.
Namor and She-Hulk were there and were consumed by some sort of fungus-like growth that Thanos hit them with.
Nebula was there but she was little more than a shambling corpse, the walking dead in other words. But eventually she would take the gauntlet from Thanos after he’d defeated a host of celestial beings, including Galactus, the Stranger, and even Eternity.
The X-Men were represented by Cyclops and Wolverine. Cyclops was suffocated when Thanos materialized a clear box around his head, while Wolverine managed to sink his claws into Thanos’ chest only to have his adamantium bones turned to rubber when Thanos simply thought about it.
Nova was turned into a cascading spill of child’s blocks that Thanos promptly stomped on just before smashing Thor, whom he’d turned to glass, into pieces.
The Hulk was forced to run when Thanos increased his size and threatened to squash him, while the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy, a group composed of completely different people, weren’t even there.
The original Infinity Gauntlet was much different than the movie we’re getting, but unfortunately Disney didn’t own the rights to all the pertinent characters before the movie was began, and reshoots at this point would just upset the fans to no end since it would take a long, LONG time to get the movie out. So enjoy what’s coming, and be glad that there’s only so many Avengers to be seen, since including all of those that have ever enjoyed the title would make for a very long and protracted film.
