The bomb that Laura Dern drops about Holdo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has nothing to do with her sexual orientation so get that out of your head right now. That seems to be what a lot of people think about when they hear that someone’s going to ‘drop a bomb’ in an article. As of right now though no one really knows Holdo’s sexual preference and that’s kind of as it should be since it wasn’t a huge part of her character. Instead there was something else that wasn’t quite shown in the movie but did make a difference since it can explain why she was always so blasted calm even when Poe was getting right up in her grill.
She trained under Leia, and not just in matters of diplomacy or even statecraft. Holdo was Force sensitive, and perhaps more than that. She had her own place in the Force and was able to use it to create one of the most awesome scenes in the movie, when she rammed Snokes’ flagship just as he went into lightspeed. As a lot of us might have already known, flying into anything solid at lightspeed would result in a massive collision and the vaporization of both objects since going that fast in such a short distance is bound to liquefy anything that’s not metal and shred and disintegrate anything that is. Holdo made her sacrifice count in a way that was absolutely awesome and made sure that First Order knew that the Resistance was anything but done. Her fight with Poe up until that point was a carefully crafted thing that wasn’t so much of a power struggle as it was a lesson to teach Poe what was really needed in a leader. Holdo knew that at one point Poe would have to be the person to step up, as did Leia, but she also knew that allowing the others to get away was her one final act of defiance against the First Order.
Holdo knew a lot about sacrifice and what it would take to keep the Resistance alive, she knew to put others before herself, and she knew to remain calm and steadfast. These are all qualities that Force users had back in the day, and the same qualities that Leia used before anyone figured out that she could use the Force in such a manner. Many people cried foul when Leia was sucked into the vacuum of space and presumed dead, but if there’s one thing you don’t ever do it’s count Leia out of anything. Keep in mind her brother was a Jedi master, and in Return of the Jedi he even admitted that his sister had the Force. She might not have mastered it in the same way that Luke did, but Leia had an iron will that allowed her to do many things that normal people could not.
It would only stand to reason that she would find someone like Holdo that was strong in the Force as well, and could also be taught to be a great leader when need be.
