Netflix Orders Australian Comedy Series From “Summer Heights High” Star Chris Lilley

Australian comedian Chris Lilley must have made a big impact on Netflix as the streaming service has just ordered another untitled series from him. It is the latest investment by the platform who are looking for original content. Chris Lilley is the writer and actor who is responsible for creating and starring in ‘Angry Boys’ and ‘Summer Heights High’. Lilley and Laura Waters co-founded Princess Pictures, an Australian production company. The pair has now collaborated on creating a new ten-part series that has been picked up by Netflix.

The streaming platform has recently invested in a wide range of original content from Australia, such as ‘Beat Bugs’, The New Legends of Monkey’, ‘Pine Gap’, and ‘Glitch’. Australia is also the country from which they obtained ‘Tidelands’, their first origination, supernatural crime drama. The news that they have now purchased the new Lilley series came from Annastacia Palaszczuk who is the Premier of the Queensland territory. So far, further details about the series are being kept under wraps. However, it has been revealed that filming for the series will take place between March and June 2018. It is also believed that this will generate a boost of around $4.9 million for the local economy.

Palaszczuk told Deadline that she was delighted that she was able to entice Laura Waters and Chris Lilley to work with her in Queensland. She went on to explain that the project would create a large number of jobs in the Australian territory, including around 100 crew and as many as 250 extras and cast members. Furthermore, she explained that the series would give the opportunity for two local screen practitioners to get involved and this would give them the chance to further develop their skills.

The series is not the first to film in this region as there have been several projects underway. The Australian government has given the area $39 million to use for production projects in the area. This has led to the filming of ‘Thor: Ragnorak’, ‘Tidelands’, and ‘Harrow’. The latter is a Disney crime drama. According to Palaszczuk, the fact that such major films and television series have been produced in Queensland recently is evidence of the local screen industry.

Chris Lilley has a good track record when it comes to creating series as each of his projects has been successful. Although he began his career in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian in his twenties, he is probably best-known for creating ‘We Can Be Heroes: Finding the Australian of the Year’. This is a mockumentary television series in which Lilley plays several characters. Other series that he has created include ‘Jonah from Tonga’, and ‘Ja’mie: Private School Girl’.

This talented actor has won multiple awards for his work. He has twice received the Logie Award for Most Popular Actor; once in 2008 for ‘Summer Heights High’ and then for a second time in 2014 for ‘Ja’ime: Private School Girl’. Other Logie Awards he has received are two Most Outstanding Comedy Awards and a Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding New Talent. Furthermore, he has won a Rose d’Or for Best Male Comedy Performance for ‘We Can Be Heroes’.
