In recent years, everyone seems to want to get in on a bit of superhero action and now it is Netflix’s turn. They recently announced that they have ordered a vigilante superhero film called ‘Past Midnight’. According to Deadline, they are now trying to get some big names involved in the project, including Keanu Reeves in the lead role. It has already been confirmed that TJ Fixman will write the script and that the movie will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa, who is best-known for directing ‘Dope’. It has also been revealed that Anthony and Joe Russo are taking on the roles of producers. The brothers have previously worked together on ‘Captain America: Civil War’.
This is not the first time that Netflix has used the concept of a vigilante superhero. The streaming platform already airs Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ as one of their regular television series. This series has an antihero with a twisted sense of justice who seems to have no problem with killing people. Netflix may be attempting to use a similar concept to this series in ‘Past Midnight’ and delivering it in the more compressed format of a feature film. If Keanu Reeves does take on the lead role in ‘Past Midnight’, it will not be the first time he has taken on an antihero type character. In the ‘John Wick’ movies, he played a killer with a code. The next installment of that film series is set for release in 2019. It is possibly his experience of this genre of character that has led to Netflix being so keen to secure him for the lead role.
However, Reeves involvement in the Netflix project has not yet been confirmed and the actor already has a busy schedule ahead for 2018. He has two films that are both currently in post-production; ‘Replicas’, in which he plays Will Foster, and ‘Siberia, in which he portrays a character called Lucas Hill. TJ Fixman may seem a strange choice of writer for the movie as he has little experience of scriptwriting for films. His area of experience is predominantly in the video game genre and he is best-known for writing the ‘Ratchet & Clank’ series of video games for PlayStation. However, there was a movie adaptation of this video game and Fixman was also the writer for that film.
Opting for Rick Fimuyiwa makes a little more sense as he has recently gained a lot of attention in the film industry. His directorial work on ‘Dope’ was critically acclaimed and has made his name known in entertainment circles. It is also rumored that he will be taking on the roles of both writer and director for ‘Black Hole’. This is a fantasy thriller that is based on a novel of the same name by Charles Burn. This is set for release on both Plan B and New Regency.
Netflix has yet to confirm any further details about ‘Past Midnight’, including when they are planning on making it available to viewers on their streaming platform.
