There are scores of directors in Hollywood that you would never think would direct a certain type of film largely because a lot of them tend to find their niche and stick to it. Once they find their groove it’s almost impossible to get them to do anything else, and this is mostly because they have a very distinct image and a reputation to uphold that they don’t want to tarnish in any way. A lot of directors however will take that leap and try to do something outside of their comfort zone. It might not always pan out but there is always the chance that it will teach them something valuable for later on in their career and offer them a bit of insight they might not have had to begin with.
A lot of times it comes down to using these films as a learning experience.
5. James Cameron-Titanic
If you’d known Cameron’s interests in deep-sea diving then this wouldn’t have come as much of a surprise, but given what he’d already done in his past, the type of movies mind you, then this one might have been just a little bit odd to see. After directing T2, the love story of Titanic is such a different story that it’s almost as if Cameron did a one-eighty and decided to go romantic overnight. But really if you look at his personal interests it makes a lot more sense.
4. Martin Scorcese-The King of Comedy
Honestly when you think of Scorcese you think more along the lines of Taxi Driver and other such films. Having Robert De Niro in the film is pretty standard for Scorcese, but being about something amusing and funny, even if it’s punctuated by more drama than anything, doesn’t really seem his style or speed. Instead you look for anything have to do with mafia or something similar if you have this director in mind.
3. Steven Spielberg-Lincoln
Big effects and an epic story are two key points that a lot of people look for when they’re thinking of Steven Spielberg. Lincoln is an epic story but not in the same vein as a lot of his other movies. He’s done period pieces before but this one still seemed kind of off the beaten track for him. No matter, he made it work, but a lot of people kind had to back up and wonder just why Spielberg went in this direction.
2. Quentin Tarantino-Star Trek
Some people say it’s a sure thing while others say that it’s not one hundred percent set yet, but the rumors flying around that Tarantino is going to direct a Star Trek movie are hard to ignore. It’s also hard to ignore that the famed blood, guts, and expletive-heavy movies that he favors so often aren’t exactly in the same category as the final frontier. It would mean a lot of toning down on Tarantino’s part or some serious reconditioning for Star Trek fans.
1. Stanley Kubrick-The Shining
There was usually something twisted or inherently messed up with Kubrick’s movies but this one went straight into another level with the Stephen King novel that inspired terror in so many people that watched it. In fact Kubrick even kept Shelly Duvall a nervous wreck on purpose so that she would look continually strung out, but he kept Danny Lloyd well away from the more horrifying parts of the movie.
Just because they don’t do movies like this often doesn’t mean they can’t.
