Gemma Chan has been added as another character to the highly anticipated Captain Marvel movie and will be play the role of Minn-Erva. How she’ll be utilized in the movie isn’t quite known thus far but her character is known to be similar to that of Carol Danvers in that her DNA was genetically mutated by an alien race and as a result she became incredibly durable and acquired the powers of flight and superhuman strength, along with something that comes close to precognition. So far the idea is that she’ll obviously interact with Captain Marvel but there’s no word yet on how. At this point all we know is that she’s joining Brie Larson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Samuel L. Jackson as the main part of the cast.
What is known about Minn-Erva from the comics at this point is that she’s not a nice person and is out to serve her people, the Kree, at whatever cost it might take to those she attempts to work against. Hiding out on Earth as Dr. Minerva she originally had plans to find and mate with the original Captain Marv-Ell in an attempt to continue the Kree’s genetic code. For the most part she’s all about serving her people and taking what she needs no matter how it has to be done. This has put her at odds with several superheroes in the past such as Captain Marvel, Quasar, and Spider-Man just to name a few. She’s more than capable of holding her own in a fight and doing some damage but despite her capabilities she’s not the strongest character in the MCU despite having a similar power set to Captain Marvel.
As of now we know that the story is going to be set in the 1990’s and will be focusing on the origin story of Captain Marvel more than anything, so Minn-Erva will no doubt play a part in her ascension be it good or bad. Another part of the MCU that we’ll see in this story that we haven’t seen to date are the Skrulls, the natural enemies of the Kree and a race that has been known to cause problems throughout the MCU for a few superheroes in the past. In fact there was one particular Skrull that was deemed very problematic for one team, the Fantastic Four. The Super Skrull was somehow imbued with every power that the Fantastic Four possessed, and therefore became a very formidable opponent that could use each power in conjunction and be absolutely lethal while doing it.
If the Skrulls are in this movie then maybe it will eventually tie in to something that could be leading towards a much-needed reboot of the Fantastic Four as well, since many of these heroes have worked together in the past. It would be great to see them all come together in an epic crossover at least once to see how it would work. Until then, we’ll be waiting patiently to see how Captain Marvel pans out.
