Famous playwright David Mamet has written a play about Harvey Weinstein. It seems that every time the disgraced mogul’s name is about to fall into obscurity someone brings it racing back to remind people just why things are as messed up as they are now in Hollywood. The sad part is that Weinstein isn’t the only one to blame and certainly isn’t the only evil that’s been exposed in the industry. He’s just the catalyst that started the hard charge that’s been occurring now since 2017. He’s the guy whose face is thrust into the public eye when the matter of sexual harassment is brought up time and again in order to push forth a new movement or a vendetta that people want to take against those that have allegedly done something wrong in the past.
Mamet has at least stated that it bears looking at when talking about sexuality in society and the possible ills that can and do occur. He doesn’t name Harvey Weinstein in the play apparently but he has no trouble telling those that will listen that this play is in fact based around him. At this point there’s no real idea what the play is about but with the mere mention of Weinstein one can guess that it’s not going to be a feelgood play that will let the curtain fall without controversy being seen, heard, and felt by every audience member in attendance. The mention of Weinstein is enough to get almost anyone’s hackles up and have them ready to spring upon any idea that Weinstein might be glorified in some way. Mamet, who has already produced notable works that people have loved, might be needing to walk on his tiptoes and talk to some people in a softer voice for a while after releasing this play.
Or not. In truth there’s nothing to be ashamed of or nervous about. It might not seem that the play will be anything for Weinstein to crow about should he find out, which he likely already has or will, but the freedom of expression through art is still a right that hasn’t been taken away. The only issue would be in how Mamet presents the character of Weinstein. Not using his name is certainly a good idea, so therefore any lawsuits that might come up would be seen as petty since there’s nothing to say that Mamet didn’t use Weinstein as mere inspiration and not for character development. One can only think that upon being released, this play is going to be something that people might talk about for a while, if they talk at all.
Weinstein is fast becoming a name that a lot of people simply don’t want to hear, and many people aren’t willing to even discuss the man let alone say his name. What he did and what he admitted to and then attempted to lie about has made him a rather pathetic figure that history will likely remember in a very poor light.
